Interest in critical incident stress debriefings for firefighters has grown over the last decade. Some researchers report that debriefings protect firefighters from stress-related disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Proponents of the interventions claim extraordinary need and success. Controlled and correlational studies have largely failed to demonstrate therapeutic effects, and some report iatrogenic effects. This study examined the relationships between debriefings and several mental health variables in a large sample of firefighters. Debriefing had a weak inverse correlation with negative affectivity and a weak positive correlation with positive world assumptions. No relationship was found between debriefing and PTSD.

Working in the Midst of Trauma: Exposure and Coping in News Camera Operators
Ikizer, Gozde; Karancı, Ayşe Nuray; Kocaoglan, Sibel (2019-05-19)
News camera operators are among the first responders to crises, emergencies, and other human suffering. This study is an attempt in the literature to explore trauma exposure and coping in news camera operators who are likely to experience primary and secondary traumatization simultaneously. Qualitative data from 20 news camera operators were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Two superordinate themes emerged: (a) physical and psychological impact and (b) strategies of coping. The resul...
Mental health of Turkish civil engineers in the construction industry
Üstün, Dündar Can; Tokdemir, Onur Behzat; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-6-21)
The construction industry is notoriously dangerous regarding employees’ physical safety. Countermeasures have been developed in the past to prevent hazards. Although the construction industry is showing progress in workplace safety, an essential part of the health problem is often neglected; mental health. Few studies have been made in the past regarding the mental health of the workers. These studies are mostly done in developed countries. Turkey, as a developing country, is the subject location of this th...
EFPA and Work on Disaster, Crisis, and Trauma Psychology
Saari, Salli; Karancı, Ayşe Nuray; Yule, William (2011-01-01)
In response to increasing concern about the effects of crises, disaster, trauma and, more recently, terrorism, EFPA established first a working party and then a Standing Committee to advise on the part psychology can play in preparing for emergencies and responding to them. The Committee has drawn together evidence and views from across Europe and the wider international scene. It has worked closely with the European Commission and has embarked on further training for members from recently acceded countries...
Pre-Positioning Disaster Response Facilities and Relief Items
RENKLİ, Cigdem; Duran, Serhan (2015-07-04)
Large-scale disasters cause enormous damage to people living in the affected areas. Providing relief quickly to the affected is a critical issue in recovering the effects of a disaster. Pre-disaster planning has an important role on reducing the arrival time of relief items to the affected areas and efficiently allocating them. In this study, a mixed integer programming model is proposed in order to pre-position warehouses throughout a potential affected area and determine the amount of relief items to be h...
Accident Analysis for Construction Safety Using Latent Class Clustering and Artificial Neural Networks
Ayhan, Bilal Umut; Tokdemir, Onur Behzat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2020-03-01)
Despite many improvements in safety management, the construction industry still has the highest potential for occupational injuries including High Severe (HS) work events, which result in injuries or fatalities, and Low Severe (LS) work events, which cause near misses or nonserious injuries. The analysis of incidents is highly dependent on the quality of records. Problems in recording and the heterogeneity of incident data may create conflicts while analyzing the relationship between attributes. The objecti...
