Recent research conducted on campus learning environments suggests that more learning takes place outside of class time than ever before; thus, students seek alternative learning spaces in campus settings. This research focuses on open spaces within university campuses, defined as 'campus open spaces', as alternative learning settings and aims at answering the following questions: 1) How is learning experienced in campus open spaces? 2) What are the design attributes of learning in campus open spaces? 3) Do design attributes significantly affect learning in campus open spaces? The paper presents an exploratory inquiry conducted with 60 students from the campus of Middle East Technical University, Turkey. By using qualitative and quantitative techniques, the paper validates that learning is experienced not only in formal learning spaces but also in informal open spaces. It presents the ways in which campus open space design influences students' learning, offering recommendations for campus open space design.

Exploring prospective secondary mathematics teachers' interpretation of student thinking through analysing students' work in modelling
Kabar, Makbule Gözde Didiş; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Çetinkaya, Bülent; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Alacacı, Cengiz (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2016-09-01)
Researchers point out the importance of teachers' knowledge of student thinking and the role of examining student work in various contexts to develop a knowledge base regarding students' ways of thinking. This study investigated prospective secondary mathematics teachers' interpretations of students' thinking as manifested in students' work that embodied solutions of mathematical modelling tasks. The data were collected from 25 prospective mathematics teachers enrolled in an undergraduate course through fou...

Akin, Tayfun; KESKİN, SİNAN; ÇIRALI SARICA, HATİCE; Dalgıç, Ceylan; ERDEM, MUKADDES (2015-07-08)
This study was conducted to examine students' perceptions of collaboration, socialization and task complexity in an online collaborative learning environment. Implementation of the collaborative learning was performed via Google Docs. The study group consists of 43 fourth grade university students who take "Research Methods" course. The students were divided into 11 groups. The students were expected to prepare a research proposal in line with the problem statement which was determined by themselves as part...
Exploring the Effects of Science Writing Heuristic Approach on 8th Grade Students Metacognition
Tucel, Tuğçe; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Öztekin, Ceren (2015-09-04)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach on middle school students' metacognition. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental research design, the non-equivalent control group post-test only design was used with the aim to compare the experimental and the comparison groups mean difference with respect to dependent variables. 60 eight grade students with a mean age of 14 years in two classes selected from one public school in an urban area. One class was ra...
