Underwater gliders: modeling, control and simulation studies
Gören, Semih; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2016)
This thesis includes mathematical model, navigation, controller design and guidance of the underwater gliders. Firstly, the mathematical model of the underwater glider is obtained with external forces and moments. The hydrodynamic coefficients are obtained by using the strip theory and Missile DATCOM Simulation Program. For navigation, optimal state estimator Kalman filter is implemented to find the position and the linear velocities of the underwater glider. The controllers are designed according to the li...
Marine debris in bottom trawl catches and their effects on the selectivity grids in the north eastern Mediterranean
Eryasar, Ahmet Raif; ÖZBİLGİN, HÜSEYİN; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Sakman, Serdar (2014-04-15)
In this study composition of marine debris and their blocking potential on the selectivity grid systems deployed on demersal trawls were investigated in the north eastern Mediterranean. For this, a total of 132 hauls were examined in two fishing season between 20 September 2010 and 19 February 2012. Results showed that plastic items were the most abundant debris (73% in terms of weight) and they were followed by metals (10%). Because of plastics and packing debris, it is highly probable that grids may have ...
Marine Algae-PLA composites as de novo alternative to porcine derived collagen membranes
Sayin, S.; Kohlhaas, T.; Veziroglu, S.; Okudan, E. S.; Naz, M.; Schroeder, S.; Saygili, E.; Acil, Y.; Faupel, F.; Wiltfang, J.; Aktas, O. C.; Guelses, A. (2020-09-01)
Resorbable and volume-stable collagen matrices have been preferred as grafting materials for diverse clinical applications in recent years. On the other hand, there is always an existing risk of transmission of infection with the cells or the tissues of the graft in using such collagen matrices. Moreover, considering the economic aspects, there is also a need for cost-efficient alternative materials. In this sense, marine algae can be considered as alternatives since they represent vast and cheap source of ...
Underwater target detection with hyperspectral imagery for search and rescue operations
Eken, İsa Cem; Çetin, Yasemin; Department of Information Systems (2017)
Fast and precise target detection is an issue in underwater object detection applications such as search and rescue, mine detection, archeological remains, etc. Hyperspectral imaging could be effective in determining different components in a selected region thanks to its ability to provide detailed spectral information. The detection of underwater objects with their above-water reflectance signature may not be efficient because of the reflectance changes due to water column. The detection should be conduct...
Coastal Tsunami and Risk Assessment for Eastern Mediterranean Countries
Yavuz, Cüneyt; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin (null; 2017-12-17)
Tsunamis are rarely experienced events that have enormous potential to cause large economic destruction on the critical infrastructures and facilities, social devastation due to mass casualty, and environmental adverse effects like erosion, accumulation and inundation. Especially for the past two decades, nations have encountered devastating tsunami events. The aim of this study is to investigate risks along the Mediterranean coastline due to probable tsunamis based on simulations using reliable historical ...
