Experimental investigation of turbulent flow through single-hole orifice placed in a pipe by means of time-resolvedparticle image velocimetry and unsteady pressure measurements
Anantharaman, Vinod; Waterson, Nicholas; Nakiboglu, Gunes; Perçin, Mustafa; Van Oudheusden, Bas W. (null; 2016-07-04)
The flow passing through a sharp-edged orifice is studied using two experimental techniques over a pipe Reynolds number range of 4000 to 27000. The flow separates at the orifice inlet and is accelerated through its hole in the form of a confined jet. For a given orifice, the mean reattachment length is found to remain fairly independent of the inflow Reynolds number. Velocity and pressure fluctuations attain peak values in regions lying upstream of the mean reattachment point. Under the conditions tested, t...
Experimental determination of hydrodynamic dispersion coefficients for heavy metals using compacted clay
Camur, MZ; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2001-07-27)
Mass transport of ions through the Ankara clay liner, which was prepared under three different compaction conditions, was studied experimentally on the basis of sorption, advection and hydrodynamic dispersion processes. Under optimum compaction conditions, effective porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the material were 0.32 and 0. 13-0.26 x 10(-8) cm s(-1), respectively. Effective diffusion coefficients of Cd, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn ions were, respectively, 2.54, 9.51, 2.22, 2.85, 2.22,...
Experimental characterization of a pressure swirl spray by analyzing the half cone angle fluctuation
Amoresano, A.; Allouis, Christophe Gerard; Di Santo, M.; Iodice, P.; Quaremba, G.; Niola, V (2018-06-01)
Pressure swirl sprays are frequently used in burners for gas turbines like the LPP chamber or to generate diffusion flames. Combustion between fuel and the air is governed by complex phenomena determined by the mixing of the mass flow rate of the two phases liquid and gaseous. Characterization of the spray by measuring the half cone angle fluctuations with a speed camera and a Lagrangian approach allows the working space of the spray to be defined and the "signature" of the spray in well-defined conditions ...

Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Winglets on the Tip Vortex Behavior of a Model Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Using Particle Image Velocimetry
Ostovan, Yasar; Akpolat, M. Tugrul; Uzol, Oğuz (2019-02-01)
This study presents an experimental investigation on the effects of winglets on the near wake flow around the tip region and on the tip vortex characteristics downstream of a 0.94 m diameter three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) rotor. Phase-locked 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are performed with and without winglets covering 120 deg of azimuthal progression of the rotor. The impact of using winglets on the flow field near the wake boundary as well as on the tip vortex characte...
