Assessing pre-service teachers' environmental literacy in Turkey as a mean to develop teacher education programs
Tuncer, Gaye; Öztekin, Ceren; Sungur, Semra; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Ertepinar, HAMİDE; Kaplowitz, Michael (2009-07-01)
The study investigates environmental literacy of pre-service teachers at one of the largest public universities in Turkey. The research evaluates the relationship of pre-service teachers' environmental knowledge, attitude, and concerns of their interests in environmental problems, involving outdoor activities, parents' interest and involvement in environmental activities. Canonical analysis is used to explore relationships between pre-service teachers' environmental background and literacy. The results are ...
The impact of over-exploitation on the genetic structure of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations determined by RAPD markers
Lise, Yildiray; Kaya, Zeki; Isik, Fikret; Sabuncu, Rumi; Kandemir, Irfan; Önde, Sertaç (2007-01-01)
To determine the possible impact of over-exploitation on the genetic structure of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations, three natural and three over-exploited (human degraded) populations of the species in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated with Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). With the 80 RAPT) primers tested, 12 of them yielded 137 polymorphic RAPD fragments. Four of the studied populations maintained unique fragments. The mean proportion of polymorphic fragments fo...
Sustainable development and management of an aquifer system in western Turkey
SAKIYAN, J; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2004-02-01)
This study presents the establishment of sustainable development and management policies for the Kucuk Menderes River Basin aquifer system in western Turkey. Geological, hydrogeological, and geophysical data are used conjunctively to define various hydrogeological units and their geometry. Distributions of hydraulic-parameter values and recharge are estimated by geostatistical methods and hydrologic simulations, respectively. A finite-difference groundwater flow model is used to represent the unconfined flo...
Genetic Variation in Cold Hardiness and Phenology Between and Within Turkish Red Pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) Populations: Implications for Seed Transfer
Kandemir, Gaye; Kaya, Zeki; TEMEL, FATİH; Önde, Sertaç (2010-01-01)
Wind-pollinated seeds from 40 trees (half-sib families) were collected from each of six Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations in southern Turkey. Two-year old seedlings were evaluated for growth, phenology and cold resistance in a common garden experiment established in Ankara, located outside the species' natural range. Each family was represented with a six-tree row plot within each of the three replications. The below freezing temperatures (-15.2 degrees C) observed in January and February of ...
The Effects of Test Environments on Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Seedling Traits in 2-Year-old Douglas-fir
Kaya, Zeki (1992-01-01)
The effects of test environments (dry versus wet) on estimation of genetic parameters in seedling traits were studied in 160 open-pollinated families of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) from southwestern Oregon. Seedlings from four populations were grown in two test environments for two growing seasons. Between test environments, -9 bars of water potential difference were created in both growing seasons. Estimated genetic variances in most growth and phenology traits were considerably high...
