On the possibility of wittgensteinian language of ethics
Oktar, Sibel; Turan, Şeref Halil; Department of Philosophy (2008)
In this study, the standpoint that discourse on ethics is impossible is examined. As Ludwig Wittgenstein is the first philosopher who explicitly said that ethics is inexpressible, the main concentration is on Wittgenstein’s conception of ethics. Analytic philosophy’s questions regarding ethics are about the meaning of the expressions of value rather than conduct. It is generally recognized that the distinction between these questions and the emphasis on the definition of value judgements starts with G.E. Mo...
On an insufficient argument against sufficient reason
Vallicella, WF (Wiley, 1997-04-01)
In one of its versions, the principle of sufficient reason maintains that every true proposition has a sufficient reason for its truth. Recently, a number of philosophers have argued against the principle on the ground that there are propositions such as the conjunction of all truths that are ‘too big’ to have a sufficient reason. The task of this article is to show that such maximal propositions pose no threat to the principle. According to what is perhaps the most ‘popular’ version of the principle to suf...
Differential forms in the model theory of differential fields
Pierce, D (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2003-09-01)
Fields of characteristic zero with several commuting derivations can be treated as fields equipped with a space of derivations that is closed under the Lie bracket. The existentially closed instances of such structures can then be given a coordinate-free characterization in terms of differential forms. The main tool for doing this is a generalization of the Frobenius Theorem of differential geometry.

A survey of the distinction between ethics and politics with an aristotelian appraisal
Çelik, Sinan Kadir; İnam, Ahmet; Department of Philosophy (2010)
In the history of philosophy, ethics and politics have either been considered as two unrelated, irreducible realms or as identical to each other. In the thesis the historical transformation of the problematic relation between ethics and politics is critically evaluated. It is argued that from the emergence of the conflict in Ancient Greece following the “Socratic ideal” to the modern attempt for its resolution by the “Machiavellian revolution,” the prominent theories developed for dealing with the problem h...
