Optimal control and reduced order modelling of Fitzhugh–Nagumo equation

In this thesis, we investigate model order reduction and optimal control of FitzHugh-Nagumo equation (FHNE). FHNE is coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) of activator-inhibitor types. Diffusive FHNE is a model for the transmission of electrical impulses in a nerve axon, whereas the convective FHNE is a model for blood coagulation in a moving excitable media. We discretize these state FHNEs using a symmetric interior penalty Galerkin (SIPG) method in space and an average vector field (AVF) method in...
Optimal allocation and processing time decisions on non-identical parallel CNC machines: epsilon-constraint approach
Gürel, Sinan (Elsevier BV, 2007-12-01)
When the processing times of jobs are controllable, selected processing times affect both the manufacturing cost and the scheduling performance. A well known example for such a case that this paper specifically deals with is the turning operation on a CNC machine. Manufacturing cost of a turning operation is a nonlinear convex function of its processing time. In this paper, we deal with making optimal machine-job assignments and processing time decisions so as to minimize total manufacturing cost while the ...

Optimal control of convective FitzHugh-Nagumo equation
Uzunca, Murat; Kucukseyhan, Tugba; Yücel, Hamdullah; Karasözen, Bülent (2017-05-01)
We investigate smooth and sparse optimal control problems for convective FitzHugh Nagumo equation with traveling wave solutions in moving excitable media. The cost function includes distributed space time and terminal observations or targets. The state and adjoint equations are discretized in space by symmetric interior point Galerkin (SIPG) method and by backward Euler method in time. Several numerical results are presented for the control of the traveling waves. We also show numerically the validity of th...
