Performance of slit weir

2006-09-01
Slit weirs designed to measure small discharges in open channel flows are investigated. Experimental data available in the literature are added to study the effect of the slit width. An explicit relation for the discharge coefficient is obtained by a conventional Reynolds number definition. The discharge coefficient is modified to increase the working range of slit weirs for small values of head to slit-width ratios.

Measurement of small discharges in open channels by Slit Weir
Aydın, İsmail; HINCAL, Onur (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2002-01-01)
A rectangular slit weir is designed for measurement of small (<0.005 m(3)/s) discharges. The discharge coefficient is determined experimentally using the measured discharges and the corresponding heads over the weir. The relationship between the discharge coefficient and all relevant dimensionless parameters is investigated. It is concluded that the discharge coefficient can be represented solely as a function of Reynolds number.
Flow and turbulence structure around abutments with sloped sidewalls
Köken, Mete (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2014-01-01)
Results of eddy-resolving numerical simulations are used to investigate flow and turbulence structure around an isolated abutment with sloped sidewalls at conditions corresponding to the start (flatbed) and the end (equilibrium bathymetry) of the scour process. Besides cases where the abutment is not protected against scour using riprap, the paper considers cases where a riprap apron of constant width is present around the base of the abutment at the start of the scour process. The paper also discusses the ...
Finite element analysis of composite laminates subjected to axial and transverse loading
Baskın, İsmail Cem; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
This thesis focuses on the investigation of behavior of thick and moderately thick laminates under transverse and horizontal loading for different boundary conditions and configurations. An efficient finite element solution is proposed for analyzing composite laminates. Based on a combination of composite theory and 3-D Elasticity Theory, a 3-D finite element program is developed in MATLAB for calculating the stresses, strains and deformations of composite laminates under transverse and/or horizontal loadin...
An experimental study into bearing of rigid piled rafts under vertical loads
Türkmen, Haydar Kürşat; Ergun, Mehmet Ufuk; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In this study, the load bearing behavior of piled raft foundations is investigated performing laboratory and field tests. Piled raft foundation of a multi storey building was also instrumented and monitored in order to study the load sharing mechanism of piled raft foundations. A small reinforced concrete piled raft of 2.3 m square supported by four mini piles at the corners was loaded and contribution of the raft support up to 41 % of the total load was observed. The soil was stiff fissured Ankara clay wit...
Nonlinear mixing length model for prediction of secondary currents in uniform channel flows
Aydın, İsmail (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2009-01-29)
A nonlinear turbulence model for numerical solution of uniform channel flow is presented. Turbulent stresses are evaluated from a nonlinear mixing length model that relates turbulent stresses to quadratic products of the mean rate of strain and the mean vorticity. The definition of the mixing length, based on a three-dimensional integral measure of boundary proximity, eliminates the need for solution of additional transport equations for the turbulence quantities. Experimental data from the literature for c...
