On the complexity of shapes embedded in ZN
Arslan, Mazlum Ferhat; Tarı, Zehra Sibel; Department of Computer Engineering (2019)
Shape complexity is a hard-to-quantify quality, mainly due to its relative nature. In common view, circles are considered to be the simplest shapes. However, when implemented in computer, none of the circularity measures yield the expected scores for the circle. This is because digital domain (Z^n) realizations of circles are only approximations to the ideal form. Consequently, complexity orders computed in reference to circle are unstable. As a remedy, we consider squares to be the simplest shapes relative...
On the Limits of Photocatalytic Water Splitting
İpek Torun, Bahar; Üner, Deniz (2019-01-01)
The major drawbacks on the limited H2 and O2 evolution activities of one-step photocatalytic water splitting systems are given here with the emphasis on charge recombination, back-oxidation reactions, and mass transfer limitations. Suppression of these unwanted phenomena is shown to be possible with the usage of small crystal-sized photocatalysts with low defect concentrations, presence of phase junctions, selection of co-catalyst that would be active for H2 evolution but inactive for O2 reduction, coating ...
On the universality of low-energy string model
Dereli, T; Obukhov, YN (IOP Publishing, 2000-01-07)
The low-energy (bosonic 'heterotic') string theory is interpreted as a universal limit of the Kaluza-Klein reduction when the dimension of an internal space goes to infinity. We show that such an approach is helpful in obtaining classical solutions of the string model. As a particular application, we obtain new exact static solutions for the two-dimensional effective string model. They turn out to be in agreement with the generalized no-hair conjecture, in complete analogy with the four- and higher-dimensio...
