Message in a bottle: what shapes university students' understanding of sustainability?

2016-01-01
Our research question concerned how life stories shape university students' understanding of the sustainable use of natural resources. We searched for an answer for this question by listening to the life stories of nine students from a public university in Turkey. The difference between this research and former work is that we were not concerned with professionals rather we interviewed the university students. While interviewing students, we only asked them to think about their life experience so far and tell us what shaped their thinking on sustainability. The evaluations of the stories displayed that the people, time, and places were different, but the outcomes of the stories were not. The students reflected the role of their family, especially their mothers' tendency for the sustainable use of natural resources in shaping their own attitudes and behaviors toward sustainability.

Avoidance from Thought Experiments: Fear of misconception
Özdemir, Ömer Faruk (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
Two independent lines of researchmental simulations and thought experimentsprovide strong arguments about the importance of perceptual modalities for the instructional practices in science education. By situating the use of mental simulations in the framework of thought experiments, this study investigated the nature and the role of mental simulations in the context of problem-solving. This study draws on data collected through problem-solving sessions with five physics graduates. Throughout the problem-sol...
Science Teachers' Professional Development about Science Centers Enhancing Science Teachers' Views Concerning Nature of Science
Eren-Sisman, Ece N.; Cigdemoglu, Ceyhan; KANLI, UYGAR; KÖSEOĞLU, FİTNAT (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-10-01)
The purpose of this study is twofold: first, to delve into professional development (PD) of science teachers' views about nature of science (NOS) throughout activities linking NOS aspects to science centers (SCs), and second, to reveal how a science teacher uses NOS aspects while teaching in SCs. An instrumental qualitative case study method with different data sources was used. There were 18 elementary science teachers participating voluntarily in this study. Additionally, one science teacher among the par...
