The paper presents results of numerical investigations of electromagnetic (optical) ray propagation inside a sphere, made of optically uniaxial crystal. The types of caustics formed by the ray trajectory inside the sphere are cleared up. It has been demonstrated the difference between the types of caustics formed by the extraordinary ray trajectory inside the sphere made of optically positive and negative crystals. Results are discussed on the basis of one-to-one mapping of 2D billiard problem inside isotropic region bounded by ellipse onto anisotropic one.

Wireless Sensing in Complex Electromagnetic Media: Construction Materials and Structural Monitoring
Ozbey, Burak; DEMİR, Hilmi Volkan; Kurç, Özgür; ERTÜRK, VAKUR BEHÇET; ALTINTAŞ, AYHAN (2015-10-01)
In this paper, wireless sensing in the presence of complex electromagnetic media created by combinations of reinforcing bars and concrete is investigated. The wireless displacement sensing system, primarily designed for use in structural health monitoring (SHM), is composed of a comb-like nested split-ring resonator (NSRR) probe and a transceiver antenna. Although each complex medium scenario is predicted to have a detrimental effect on sensing in principle, it is demonstrated that the proposed sensor geome...
Tikhonov theorem for differential equations with singular impulses
Akhmet, Marat (2018-01-01)
The paper considers impulsive systems with singularities. The main novelty of the present research is that impulses (impulsive functions) are singular. This is beside singularity of differential equations. The Lyapunov second method is applied to proof the main theorems. Illustrative examples with simulations are given to support the theoretical results.
Piezoelectric torsional actuation in d(36) shear-mode PMN-PT single crystals
Berik, Pelin; Chang, Wei-Yi; Jiang, Xiaoning (2018-03-08)
This paper presents an experimental and numerical characterization of a piezoelectric d(36) shear-based torsion actuator made of xPb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-(1-x)PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) single crystals embedded between Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers. The generated rate of twist value of the piezoelectric d(36)-mode PMN-PT single crystal composite torsion actuator was obtained using a laser vibrometer from the maximum detected transverse deflection measurement. The quasi-static torsion actuation experiments were conducte...
Quantum system structures of quantum spaces and entanglement breaking maps
Dosi, A. A. (IOP Publishing, 2019-07-01)
This paper is devoted to the classification of quantum systems among the quantum spaces. In the normed case we obtain a complete solution to the problem when an operator space turns out to be an operator system. The min and max quantizations of a local order are described in terms of the min and max envelopes of the related state spaces. Finally, we characterize min-max-completely positive maps between Archimedean order unit spaces and investigate entanglement breaking maps in the general setting of quantum...
Simulation of Impact Induced Damage Process in a Carbon/Epoxy Composite Beam
Bozkurt, Mirac Onur; Çöker, Demirkan; Parnas, Kemal Levend (2018-12-01)
This paper presents numerical investigation of low-velocity impact (LVI) damage process in a unidirectional [0/90]s carbon/epoxy composite beam. Numerical simulations based on finite element method are conducted in ABAQUS/Explicit. A 3D model representing LVI experiments is generated. Matrix and fiber damage mechanisms are simulated by implementation of continuum damage mechanics based composite damage model with Hashin failure initiation criteria via a user-written VUMAT subroutine. Cohesive interfaces are...
