Geometrically nonlinear aeroelastic behavior of pretwisted composite high aspect ratio wings, structurally modeled as thin walled beams (TWB) is studied. The structural equations of motion are obtained for the circumferentially asymmetric stiffness (CAS) configuration TWB based on the kinematic relations governing the thin walled beams, including the nonlinear strain-displacement relations and utilizing the principles of analytical dynamics. Unsteady aerodynamic loads in the incompressible flow regime are expressed using Wagner's function in time-domain. The aeroelastic system of equations is augmented by the differential equations governing the aerodynamics lag states to come up with the final coupled fluid-structure equations of motion. The governing equations of the aeroelastic system is solved, for the TWB with CAS composite layup, by means of a Ritz based solution methodology utilizing the mode shapes of the linear structural system to approximate the spatial variation of degrees of freedom in the thin walled beam. Time response of the nonlinear aeroelastic system is obtained via the Runge-Kutta direct integration algorithm. Effects of the fiber angle and pretwist angle of the CAS layup configuration on the nonlinear aeroelastic stability margins and limit cycle oscillation behavior are studied in depth.

Parallel navier stokes solutions of low aspect ratio rectangular flat wings in compressible flow
Durmuş, Gökhan; Eyi, Sinan; Department of Aeronautical Engineering (2004)
The objective of this thesis is to accomplish the three dimensional parallel thin-layer Navier-Stokes solutions for low aspect ratio rectangular flat wings in compressible flow. Two block parallel Navier Stokes solutions of an aspect ratio 1.0 flat plate with sharp edges are obtained at different Mach numbers and angles of attack. Reynolds numbers are of the order of 1.0E5-3.0E5. Two different grid configurations, the coarse and the fine grids, are applied in order to speed up convergence. In coarse grid co...
Development of site specific vertical design spectrum for Turkey
Akyüz, Emre; Gülerce, Zeynep; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Vertical design spectra may be developed in a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) by computing the hazard using vertical ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs), or using a vertical-to-horizontal spectral acceleration (V/H) ratio GMPEs to scale the horizontal spectrum that was developed using the results of horizontal component PSHA. The objective of this study is to provide GMPEs that are compatible with regional ground motion characteristics to perform both alternatives. GMPEs for the V/H ra...
Vibration characteristics of various wide flange steel beams and columns
Özel, Halil Fırat; Sarıtaş, Afşin; Tasbahjı, Tayseer (null; 2015-12-11)
Vibration characteristics of steel framed structures are affected by accurate modelling of the mass and stiffness matrices of beam and column members. In this regards, wide flange sections are the most popularly used steel sections, and calculation of axial, flexural and shear responses of these sections become critical. In this study, a mixed formulation frame finite element is developed from three-fields Hu-Washizu-Barr functional. Consistent mass matrix of the element is obtained such that determination ...
Fluid structure coupled analysis of an aerodynamic surface
Sümer, Bülent; Akgün, Mehmet A.; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2004)
In this thesis a 3-D Euler flow solver is coupled with a finite element program in order to solve static aeroelastic problems involving aircraft wings. A loosely coupled solution approach based on an iterative solution procedure is used to solve the coupled field problem. Because of the deformation of the underlying surface over which the flow is solved, Computational Fluid Dynamics mesh has to move at each computational aeroelastic iteration in order to comform to the new shape of the aerodynamic surface. ...
Investigation of missiles with strake fins and reduction of aerodynamic cross coupling effects by optimization
Usta, Engin; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
Missiles with very low aspect ratio fins (also called strakes) are generally difficult to model by using engineering level aerodynamic methods and linear theories break due to complex nature of the flow adjacent to the mutual interference of the body and fin. Since fast prediction methods cannot accurately model vortex development along and downstream of very low aspect ratio fins, they have limited success for application to missiles with strake fins. Moreover, there is limited number of CFD studies for in...
