Cyclodextrin functionalized PMMA nanofibers (PMMA/CD) were successfully produced by electrospinning technique with the goal to develop functional nanowebs. Bead-free uniform electrospun PMMA/CD nanofibers were obtained from a homogeneous solution of CDs and PMMA in dimethylformamide (DMF) using three different types of CDs, alpha-CD, beta-CD and gamma-CD. The electrospinning conditions were optimized in order to form bead-free PMMA/CD nanofibers by varying the concentrations of PMMA and CDs in the solutions. The concentration of CDs was varied from 5% up to 50% w/w, with respect to the PMMA matrix. We find that the presence of the CDs in the PMMA solutions facilitates the electrospinning of bead-free nanofibers from the lower polymer concentrations and this behavior is attributed to the high conductivity and viscosity of the PMMA/CD solutions. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of PMMA/CD nanowebs did not show any significant diffraction peaks indicating that the CD molecules are homogeneously distributed within the PMMA matrix and does not form any phase separated crystalline aggregates. Furthermore, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) studies elucidate that some CD molecules are located on the surface of the nanowebs. This suggests that these CD functionalized nanowebs may have the potential to be used as molecular filters and/or nanofilters for waste treatment purposes.

Matrix and interface modification of short carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy
Kaynak, Cevdet; Tincer, T (Elsevier BV, 2005-06-01)
In this work, effects of matrix and interface modification on the mechanical behavior of short carbon fiber-reinforced diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)-based epoxy composite were studied. For this purpose, fiber surfaces were treated by a silane coupling agent (SCA) and the epoxy matrix was modified with hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB).
Immobilization of invertase and glucose oxidase in poly 2-methylbutyl-2-(3-thienyl) acetate/polypyrrole matrices
Isik, S; Alkan, S; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Cianga, I; Yagci, Y (Elsevier BV, 2003-12-01)
Immobilization of invertase and glucose oxidase in conducting polypyrrole and copolymers of poly 2-methylbutyl-2-(3-thienyl) acetate with pyrrole were achieved via electrochemical method. Sodium dodecyl sulphate was found to be the most suitable supporting electrolyte. Maximum reaction rate, Michaelis-Menten constant and optimum temperatures were determined for native and immobilized enzymes. Storage and operational stabilities of enzyme electrodes were also investigated.
Synthesis and characterization of conducting and non-conducting polymers of sodium 2,4,6-trichlorophenolate by microwave initiation
Cakmak, O; Basturkmen, M; Kisakurek, D (Elsevier BV, 2004-07-22)
A novel synthesis of poly(dichlorophenylene oxide) and a conducting polymer were achieved simultaneously from 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in a very short time, using microwave energy. The characterizations of poly(dichlorophenylene oxide) and the conducting polymer were performed by DSC, TGA, elemental analysis, FTIR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, SEM, MS and X-ray diffraction spectrometer analyses. The combined molecular weight of the polymer, 1.8 x 10(4), was determined by using viscometry measurement. Poly(dichlorophenyle...
Electrochemical polymerisation of 2-aminofluorene in ethylalcohol/water medium
Imamoglu, T; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (Elsevier BV, 2004-08-01)
Electrochemical polymerisation of 2-aminofluorene, 2AF, was investigated in ethylalcohol/water mixture (3:2, v:v) in the presence of HClO4 as the supporting electrolyte via constant potential electrolysis, CPE. Prior to CPE, electrochemical behaviour of the monomer was investigated in the same solvent electrolyte couple utilising cyclic voltammetry, CV. Electrochemical polymerisation of the monomer yielded insoluble, dark bluish-green, conducting polymer deposit on the electrode surface. Characterisation of...
Comparison of crystallinities of high density polyethylene determined by different techniques
Akovali, G; Atalay, A (Elsevier BV, 1997-01-01)
The differences in the crystallinities of HDPE samples conditioned by three different procedures with different cooling rates were followed by use of FTIR, DSC and X-ray scattering techniques. From FTIR, relative values of crystallinities are obtained and if absolute values obtained from DSC and X-ray scattering are compared, the latter yielded higher values. All three groups of results showed the expected trend of increase of crystallinities with decrease of rate of cooling. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
