: In this study, MFI type zeolite membranes were synthesised in a recirculating flow system at elevated temperatures. MFI membranes were prepared on the inner surface of the seeded tubular alumina supports in the 140-160oC temperature range. MFI membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and single gas permeation experiments. The best membrane had a n-C4H10 single gas permeance of 3.6x10-8 mol/m2-s-Pa and n-C4H10/iso-C4H10 ideal selectivity of 20 at 25oC. The results showed that it is possible to produce high quality MFI membranes by a recirculating flow system operating at elevated temperature.

Polyimide and PEBAX flat and hollow fiber membranes for gas separation
Özdemir, Nur Konçüy; Kalıpçılar, Halil; Department of Chemical Engineering (2017)
This thesis analyzes the effect of polyimide (PI) hollow fiber membrane spinning conditions including dope solution flow rate, bore liquid flow rate, addition of more volatile solvent to dope solution, air gap height and heating zone temperature on the ideal gas separation performance and membrane morphology. The effect of PEBAX1657 coating of PI hollow fiber membrane was also investigated. The effect of incorporation of ZIF-8 crystals to PEBAX1657 flat sheet membrane, the effect of coagulant type for the p...
Experimental research on in-tube condensation under steady-state and transient conditions
Tanrikut, A; Yesin, O (2005-01-01)
In this research study, in-tube condensation in the presence of air was investigated experimentally at a heat exchanger of countercurrent type for different operating conditions. The test matrix for the steady-state condition covers the range of pressures P = 1.8 to 5.5 bars, vapor Reynolds numbers Re, = 45 000 to 94 000, and inlet air mass fraction values Xi = 0 to 52%. The effect of air manifests itself by a reduction in the local heat flux and the local heat transfer coefficient. The local heat transfer ...
Application of isokinetic sampling technique for local solid densities in upward liquid-solid flows through an annulus
Camçı, Gülden; Özbelge, Ayşe Tülay; Department of Chemical Engineering (2003)
In this study, radial solid density distributions in upward flowing water-feldspar mixtures through a concentric annulus were investigated. Local solid density measurements were performed at a test cross-section in the fully developed flow region of a concentric annulus, which is a part of a closed-loop system consisting of a head tank, a variable speed slurry pump, an orificemeter, a heat exchanger, an annulus, a temperature probe, and a drain line. The solid particles with mean diameters of 72 and 138 ?m ...
Preparation of MFI type zeolite membranes in a flow system with circulation of the synthesis solution
Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Kalıpçılar, Halil (2006-06-20)
MFI type zeolite membranes were prepared on seeded tubular alumina supports in a flow system where the synthesis solution was circulated through the support with flow rates of 6, 24 and 48 mL/min. Syntheses were carried out using clear solutions, at 80 degrees C and 95 degrees C at atmospheric pressure in the flow system, and at autogeneous pressure in the batch system. The membranes synthesized in the flow system had thickness of 1-2 mu m, and were thinner than the membranes synthesized in the batch system...
Investigation of parameters affecting morphology of microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes fabricated via phase separation microfabrication
Bolat, Cankut Kaan; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Bat, Erhan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2017)
This study examines the factors affecting the morphology of polyethersulfone membranes produced via phase separation microfabrication technique. Flat and corrugated membranes were prepared using a combination of vapor induced and liquid induced phase separation, and characterized using scanning electron microscopy, pure water permeance tests and Baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae) fouling tests. An inverse asymmetric morphology was tried to be achieved for corrugated membranes, in order to increase the...
