Outdoor mapping and localization using satellite images

Koku, Ahmet Buğra
Dolen, M.
Recently, satellite images of most urban settings has become available on the internet. In this study, a novel mapping and global localization approach, which uses these images, is proposed for outdoor mobile robots operating in urban environment. The mapping of large-scale outdoor environments is done by employing the satellite images acquired by remote sensing technology, and then a map-based approach, that is, Monte Carlo localization is used for localization. The novelty of proposed method is that it uses standard equipment present on almost all autonomous robots and satellite images thus it acts as an alternative to GPS data in urban environments. Extensive field tests are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed approach.

Fuzzy spatial data cube construction and its use in association rule mining
Işık, Narin; Yazıcı, Adnan; Department of Computer Engineering (2005)
The popularity of spatial databases increases since the amount of the spatial data that need to be handled has increased by the use of digital maps, images from satellites, video cameras, medical equipment, sensor networks, etc. Spatial data are difficult to examine and extract interesting knowledge; hence, applications that assist decision-making about spatial data like weather forecasting, traffic supervision, mobile communication, etc. have been introduced. In this thesis, more natural and precise knowle...
Geo-spatial object detection using local descriptors
Aytekin, Çağlar; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2011)
There is an increasing trend towards object detection from aerial and satellite images. Most of the widely used object detection algorithms are based on local features. In such an approach, first, the local features are detected and described in an image, then a representation of the images are formed using these local features for supervised learning and these representations are used during classification . In this thesis, Harris and SIFT algorithms are used as local feature detector and SIFT approach is ...
Application of schema matching methods to semantic web service discovery
Karagöz, Funda; Çiçekli, Fehime Nihan; Department of Computer Engineering (2006)
The Web turns out to be a collection of services that interoperate through the Internet. As the number of services increase, it is getting more and more diffucult for users to find, filter and integrate these services depending on their requirements. Automatic techniques are being developed to fulfill these tasks. The first step toward automatic composition is the discovery of services needed. UDDI which is one of the accepted web standards, provides a registry of web services. However representation capabi...
Design and implementation of an unauthorized internet access blocking system validating the source information in internet access logs
Uzunay, Yusuf; Baykal, Nazife; Department of Information Systems (2006)
Internet Access logs in a local area network are the most prominent records when the source of an Internet event is traced back. Especially in a case where an illegal activity having originated from your local area network is of concern, it is highly desirable to provide healthy records to the court including the source user and machine identity of the log record in question. To establish the validity of user and machine identity in the log records is known as source authentication. In our study, after the ...
Robust watermarking of images
Balcı, Salih Eren; Akar, Gözde; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2003)
Digital image watermarking has gained a great interest in the last decade among researchers. Having such a great community which provide a continuously growing list of proposed algorithms, it is rapidly finding solutions to its problems. However, still we are far away from being successful. Therefore, more and more people are entering the field to make the watermarking idea useful and reliable for digital world. Of these various watermarking algorithms, some outperform others in terms of basic watermarking ...
