Analysis of environmental cues causing the seasonal change in PGM (Phosphoglucomutase) allozyme frequencies in honeybees (Apis Mellifera L)
Döke, Mehmet Ali; Kence, Meral; Department of Biology (2012)
In an earlier project completed in our laboratory a seasonal fluctuation in Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) phenotype frequencies was found, so that the winter bees were almost all heterozygotes and long lived than the summer bees among which homozygotes were significantly at high frequencies at Pgm locus. Same results were obtained in populations of three subspecies, A. m. meda, A. m. caucasica, and A. m. carnica from different climatic regions. In the current study environmental cues related with seasonal change...
Genetic structure analysis of honeybee populations based on microsatellites
Bodur, Çağrı; Kence, Aykut; Department of Biology (2005)
We analyzed the genetic structures of 11 honeybee (Apis mellifera) populations from Türkiye and one population from Cyprus using 9 microsatellite loci. Average gene diversity levels were found to change between 0,542 and 0,681. Heterozygosity levels, mean number of alleles per population, presence of diagnostic alleles and pairwise FST values confirmed the mitochondrial DNA finding that Anatolian honeybees belong to north Mediterranean (C) lineage. We detected a very high level of genetic divergence among p...
Microwave extraction of phenolic compounds from caper and oleaster
Durmaz, Ezgi; Şümnü, Servet Gülüm; Şahin, Serpil; Department of Food Engineering (2012)
The main objective of this study was to extract phenolic compounds from caper and oleaster by using microwave. The effects of microwave power (400 and 700 W), extraction time (5-20 min), solid to solvent ratio (1:10, 1:20 and 1:30) and solvent type (water, ethanol and different ratios of ethanol-water mixture) on total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and concentration of the phenolic compounds in the extracts were investigated. In conventional extraction, extraction time and solvent type were used as...
Paleoclimatological approach to plio-quaternary paleosol-calcrete sequences in Bala and Gölbaşı (Ankara) by using mineralogical and geochemical proxies
Küçükuysal, Ceren; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Department of Geological Engineering (2011)
The major goal of this study is to define the paleoclimatic conditions in Ankara region during Plio-Pleistocene period by evaluating the mineralogical and geochemical proxies carried from the paleosols and their calcretes. The field observations, mineralogical, micromorphological, geochemical and stable isotope investigations were all conducted to achieve a paleoclimatic approach. As pedogenic minerals in calcretes, presence of dolomite with palygorskite in the Karahamzalı section and calcite with palygorsk...
Isolation and immunological characterization of theta class glutathione-s-transferase gstt2-2 from bovine liver
İşgör, Sultan Belgin; Çoruh, Nursen; Department of Biochemistry (2004)
The glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) (EC.2.5.1.18) are enzymes that participate in cellular detoxification of endogenous as well as foreign electrophilic compounds, function in the cellular detoxification systems and are evolved to protect cells against reactive oxygen metabolites by conjugating the reactive molecules to the nucleophile scavenging tripeptide glutathione (GSH, ?-glu-cys-gly). The GSTs are found in all eukaryotes and prokaryotic systems, in the cytoplasm, on the microsomes, and in the mitoch...
