Experimental investigation of the turbulent near wake flow field of multiscale/fractal grids
Amiri Hazaveh, Hooman; Uzol, Oğuz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2018)
Turbulent near-field flow of three different fractal grids, as well as conventional square grid, is investigated using two-dimensional particle image velocimetry. All grids are designed to maintain similar solidity, effective mesh size, and the smallest thickness for comparison. Experiments are conducted at a Reynolds number of 12000 based on effective mesh size. The instantaneous velocity field is realized on four sets of 35 equally spaced horizontal planes downstream of turbulence-generating-grids. Threed...
Approaches for multi-attribute auctions
Karakaya, Gülşah; Köksalan, Murat; Department of Industrial Engineering (2009)
There is a growing interest in electronic auctions in the literature. Many researchers work on the single attribute version of the problem. Multi-attribute version of the problem is more realistic. However, this brings a substantial difficulty in solving the problem. In order to overcome the computational difficulties, we develop an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) for the case of multi-attribute multi-item reverse auctions. We generate the whole Pareto front using the EA. We also develop heuristic procedures to...
A Probabilistic and interactive approach to multiple criteria sorting
Mutlu, Sinem; Köksalan, Murat; Serin, Yaşar Yasemin; Department of Industrial Engineering (2015)
In this thesis, we develop a method in order to assign alternatives that are evaluated by multiple criteria into preference ordered classes probabilistically. Our motivation is that; when there are large sets of alternatives, placement could be realized in a fast and effective way based on a reasonable misclassification ratio. We assume that the underlying utility function of Decision Maker (DM) is additive. We first ask DM to place reference alternatives into the classes. We develop an interactive probabil...
Generating representative nondominated point subsets in multi-objective integer programs
Ceyhan, Gökhan; Köksalan, Murat; Lokman, Banu; Department of Industrial Engineering (2014)
In this thesis, we study generating a subset of all nondominated points of multi-objective integer programs in order to represent the nondominated frontier. Our motivation is based on the fact that generating all nondominated points of a multi-objective integer program is neither practical nor useful. The computational burden could be prohibitive and the resulting set could be huge. Instead of finding all nondominated points, we develop algorithms to generate a small representative subset of nondominated po...
Control and simulation studies for a multicomponent batch packed distillation column
Ceylan, Hatice; Özgen, Canan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
During the last decades, batch distillation is preferably used with an increasing demand over continuous one, to separate fine chemicals in chemical and petroleum industries, due to its advantages like, flexibility and high product purity. Consequently, packed distillation columns, with newly generated packing materials, are advantageous compared to plate columns because of their smaller holdups, resistivity to corrosive materials and their higher separation efficiencies. Also, in many industrial applicatio...
