In this study, gamma rays were used for the first time to cure dental-base material. The effect of the radiation dose on the thermal and theological properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) used as a dental-base material was investigated. The commercial powder and liquid material (heat-curing-grade) were mixed and polymerized at 60 and 70 degreesC in a constant-temperature water bath for 30 min and then were cured by gamma rays, with total doses of 7.5, 15, 22.5, 30, 45, 52.5, 360, and 2160 krad. For each sample, the viscosity-average molecular weights were measured, and no significant differences were observed of total dose on molecular weights. A thermal investigation with differential scanning calorimetry showed an exothermic peak in the thermograms of samples that were not completely polymerized and crosslinked. The rheological nature of the samples was studied with dynamic mechanical analysis. A comparison of properties of gamma -ray-cured samples and those cured by other methods revealed gamma curing to be a superior method for producing high-molecular-weight homogenous polymers with low porosity and crosslinking. Thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of microwave and heat-cured poly(methyl methacrylate) used as dental base material
Muhtarogullari, IY; Dogan, A; Muhtarogullari, M; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 1999-12-13)
In this study, the particle size distribution, molecular weight, thermal analysis (TGA) differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of poly(methyl methacrylate) used as dental base material were investigated. The commercial raw material used were prepared for microwave curing, and they were cured by microwave and conventional heat methods. The average particle size of the powder studied (103.1 mu m) were much larger than that of the commercia...
Solid State Polymerization of N-vinylcaprolactam via Gamma Irradiation and Characterization
Usanmaz, Ali; Ozdemir, Tonguc; Polat, Özlem (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
In this study, N-vinylcaprolactam was polymerized via gamma irradiation in the solid state. The polymerization was carried out at room temperature both under vacuum and open to atmosphere. The polymerization mechanism showed auto acceleration and the rate of polymerization was higher in the presence of oxygen. Complete conversion was obtained under vacuum conditions and 90% conversion was obtained in the case of polymerization open to atmosphere. The polymers were characterized by FTIR, NMR, DSC, TGA, GPC, ...
Optical and electroluminescent properties of polyfluorene copolymers and their blends
Çırpan, Ali; KARASZ, Frank E. (Elsevier BV, 2005-01-26)
Light emitting properties of several polyfluorene (PF) copolymers (P1-P4) and their blends have been investigated. Light emitting diodes were fabricated with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al. The EL peak wavelengths were 421 nut (violet), 505, 513 nm (green) and 570 nm (yellow) for PF copolymers and 510,535 nm (green) for P1/P2 and P1/P3 blends, respectively. Forster energy transfer in the photoluminescence and electroluminescence of the polymer blends P1/P2 and P1/P3 was studied. The LED us...
Thermal stability and decomposition mechanism of poly(p-acryloyloxybenzoic acid and poly(p-methacryloyloxybenzoic acid) and their graft copolymers with polypropylene, Part II
Cetin, S.; Tincer, T. (Wiley, 2008-04-05)
Thermal stability and decomposition mechanism of poly(p-acryloyloxybenzoic) acid (PABA), p-methacryloyloxybenzoic acid (PMBA), and their graft coproducts of PP were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and TG/IR system, combined thermogravimetric analyzer, and FTIR spectrometer. The homopolymers and corresponding grafts were found to be stable in nitrogen atmosphere but started to decompose under atmospheric conditions when heated above 230 degrees C. PABA and PA...
Dynamic mechanical properties of dental base material reinforced with glass fiber
Karacaer, O; Dogan, A; Dogan, OM; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 2002-08-22)
Dynamic mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced with glass fibers were investigated. The composite used as dental base material contained other additives for different purposes to give the same appearance as natural dentals. The fiber-polymer bonding and orientation of fibers in polymer matrix are very important in the application of the product. To see that, the fibers were treated with silane and compared with untreated fibers. The commercial polymer and monomer used were the ...
