In this research, some Human-Robot Interaction mechanisms that allow a human commander to control a mobile robot via a cellular phone have been developed and successfully tested. Two different control architectures have been implemented using different software technologies. The system includes two main modes, manual and autonomous controls. The manual control mode gives the user full control over the robot whereas the autonomous control mode allows the user to activate some built-in functions of the robot such as "navigate to the meeting room". Two mobile robots, a Trilobot and a Pioneer, have been used as the development platforms in order to show the distinct features of mobile robot control with cellular phones

Human aware navigation of a mobile robot in crowded dynamic environments
Hacınecipoğlu, Akif; Konukseven, Erhan İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
As mobile robots start operating in dynamic environments crowded with humans, human-aware and human-like navigation is required to make these robots navigate safely, efficiently and in socially compliant manner. People can navigate in an interactive and cooperative fashion so that, they are able to find their path to a destination even if there is no clear path leading to it. This is clearly a dexterity of humans. But the mobile robots which have to navigate in such environments lack this feature. Even perf...
Control and motion planning for mobile robots via a secure wireless communication protocol
Kaya, Muhammed Çağrı; Eroğlu, Alperen; Temizer, Selim (null; 2013-05-21)
Mobile robot control is receiving considerably more attention in current robotics research. Especially unmanned vehicles are used in important missions such as bomb disposal, patrolling borders of a country by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), etc. This usage increases the importance of unmanned vehicles and they become a target of malevolent people. In this study, a controllable robot system is designed with a secure communication protocol. A Pioneer P3-DX robot is used as a ground vehicle. The robot operat...
From primitive behaviors to goal-directed behavior using affordances
Doǧar, Mehmet R.; Çakmak, Maya; Uǧur, Emre; Şahin, Erol (2007-12-01)
In this paper, we studied how a mobile robot equipped with a 3D laser scanner can start from primitive behaviors and learn to use them to achieve goal-directed behaviors. For this purpose, we propose a learning scheme that is based on the concept of "affordances", where the robot first learns about the different kind of effects it can create in the environment and then links these effects with the perception of the initial environment and the executed primitive behavior. It uses these learned relations to c...
Human body part detection and multi-human tracking in surveillance videos
Topçu, Hasan Hüseyin; Çiçekli, Fehime Nihan; Ulusoy, İlkay; Department of Computer Engineering (2012)
With the recent developments in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, surveillance applications are equipped with the capabilities of event/activity understanding and interpretation which usually require recognizing humans in real world scenes. Real world scenes such as airports, streets and train stations are complex because they involve many people, complicated occlusions and cluttered backgrounds. Although complex real world scenes exist, human detectors have the capability to locate pedestrians accur...
Obstacle avoidance control for a human-operated mobile robot
Mohamadi Nazarabad, Yaser; Konukseven, Erhan İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
In this study, the collaboration between human operator and a wheeled mobile robot in obstacle avoidance scenario is addressed. The tele-operation task is completed by integrating a force-feedback joystick to the human-robot system. The force-feedback joystick is able to apply forces on human operator and establish a bi-directional communication interface between the operator and the robot. Depending on levels of autonomy assigned to the robot, the operator and the robot are assigned with different roles du...
