The term Sink Powered Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (SPUASN) refers to a special configuration within the recent Remotely Powered Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (RPUASN) paradigm, where the data sink supplies energy to battery-free sensors that constitute the network. In this paper, we introduce the Cross Layer Power Adaptive CSMA/CA (X-PACCA) protocol for SPUASN. Fully free from energy constraints of traditional protocols, X-PACCA integrates MAC, network, and transport layer functionalities. Packet relaying/routing is based on CSMA/CA backoff window size adjustment according to harvested power levels at nodes. End-to-end reliability is enhanced via acknowledgments sent by the sink. Congestion is avoided via prevention of redundant packet forwarding. Neither global network information nor synchronization is required at nodes. It is shown that, with appropriate selection of protocol parameters, X-PACCA achieves low end-to-end latency and high packet delivery performance.

This thesis evaluates the performance of a new cross layer protocol, Cross Layer Power Adaptive CSMA/CA (X-PACCA), proposed for SPUASN. Simulation based performance evaluation is conducted both by investigating the effects of design...
Lifetime extension for surveillance wireless sensor networks with intelligent redeployment
Kosar, Rabun; Bojaxhiu, Ilir; Onur, Ertan; Ersoy, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2011-11-01)
For wireless sensor networks (WSNs), uneven energy consumption is a major problem. A direct consequence of this is the energy hole problem, formation of sensing voids within the network field due to battery depleted sensors in the corresponding region. Hole formations are inherent in the network topology, yet it is possible to develop strategies to delay the hole formations to later stages of the network operation and essentially extend the network lifetime without sensing quality loss. In this work, we ini...
Cognitive-Node Architecture and a Deployment Strategy for the Future WSNs
Al-Turjman, Fadi (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-10-01)
The advent of sensing and communication technologies represents the next step in the evolution of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and future applications. Future WSNs systems demand that connected devices could be able to work autonomously, while surfing on-line generated data and process them for self-decision making. Accordingly, we propose a cognitive Information-Centric Sensor Network (ICSN) framework. The fundamentals of cognition in ICSN can be recognized as a promising direction in addressing opportu...
Distributed Connectivity Restoration in Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks via Depth Adjustment
Uzun, Erkay; ŞENEL, FATİH; Akkaya, Kemal; Yazıcı, Adnan (2015-06-12)
In most applications of Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks, network connectivity is required for data exchange, data aggregation and relaying the data to a surface station. However, such connectivity can be lost due to failure of some sensor nodes which creates disruptions to the network operations. In this paper, we present two algorithms, namely BMR and DURA, which can detect network partitioning due to such node failures and re-establish network connectivity through controlled depth adjustment of nodes ...
Cognitive routing protocol for disaster-inspired Internet of Things
Ai-Turjman, Fadi (Elsevier BV, 2019-03-01)
In this paper, we propose a framework for data delivery in large-scale networks for disaster management, where numerous wireless sensors are distributed over city traffic-infrastructures, shopping-malls' parking areas, airports' facilities, etc. In general, our framework caters for energy-efficient applications in the Internet of Things (IoT) where data is propagated via relays from diverse sensor-nodes towards a gateway connected to a large-scale network such as the Internet. We consider the entire network...
