In this work we have studied using the mean field theoretical approach the nematic-smectic A phase transitions in the mixtures of liquid crystals. It is claimed in a recent work in literature that the effective free energy with a Absolute value of psi3 term where psi is the smectic A order parameter, gives a nonlinear dependence of the latent heat on the concentration near the tricritical point. However, we show mathematically that within the Absolute value of psi3 theory this dependence of the latent heat on the concentration is linear near the tricritical point. Here, we show that only the effective free energy with the Absolute value of psi5 term gives the experimentally observed quadratic dependence of the latent heat on the concentration near the tricritical point. But, this solution is mathematical. The physical solution in this theory gives a linear dependence of the latent heat on the concentration. Hence, within the mean field theory with the effective free energy where the Landau amplitude expansion is made, it is not possible to explain the observed experimental results of the latent heat near the tricritical point.

Molecular dynamics study of random and ordered metals and metal alloys
Kart, Hasan Hüseyin; Tomak, Mehmet; Department of Physics (2004)
The solid, liquid, and solidification properties of Pd, Ag pure metals and especially PdxAg1-x alloys are studied by using the molecular dynamics simulation. The effects of temperature and concentration on the physical properties of PdxÞAg1-x are analyzed. Sutton-Chen (SC) and Quantum Sutton-Chen (Q-SC) many-body potentials are used as interatomic interactions which enable one to investigate the thermodynamic, static, and dynamical properties of transition metals. The simulation results such as cohesive ene...
Effect of swaging on microstructure and tensile properties of W-Ni-Fe alloys
DURLU, NURİ; Caliskan, N. Kaan; Bor, Sakir (Elsevier BV, 2014-01-01)
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of swaging on the microstructure and tensile properties of high density two phase alloys 90W-7Ni-3Fe and 93W-4.9Ni-2.1Fe. Samples were liquid phase sintered under hydrogen and argon at 1480 degrees C for 30 min and then 15% cold rotary swaged. Measurement of microstructural parameters in the sintered and swaged samples showed that swaging slightly increased tungsten grain size in the longitudinal direction and slightly decreased tungsten grain size i...
Effect of gamma irradiation on structure and electrical properties of (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 superconductor
Albiss, BA; Ozkan, H; Bocuk, H; Hasanlı, Nızamı; Ercan, I (1997-01-01)
Specimens of pure and Pb-doped high-T-c superconductors Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (BSCCO) were irradiated with gamma-rays up to an integrated dose of about 225 MR. The variations of normal state resistance, transition temperature, critical current and lattice parameters with gamma-irradiation were studied. The normal state resistance increases with increase of gamma-dose at zero applied magnetic field, whereas the transition temperature and the critical current decrease with the same gamma-dose. The intensities of th...
A temperature-concentration (T-X) phase diagram calculated using the mean field theory for liquid crystals
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit; KARACALİ, HUSEYİN (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-06-01)
Phase-line equations for smectic-hexatic phase transitions in liquid crystals were derived using the Landau phenomenological theory. In particular, second-order transitions for the smectic-A-smectic-C (SmA-SmC) and hexatic-B-hexatic-F (or HexI) transitions were studied and the tricritical points for these transitions were located. The calculated phase-line equations were fitted (using experimental data for various liquid crystals) to construct a generalized T-X phase diagram. It was shown that the T-X phase...
A mean-field model for the phase diagram of liquid crystals
Tublek, A; Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit; Salihoglu, S (Informa UK Limited, 1998-01-01)
In this study we have developed a mean-field model to obtain the phase diagram for a mixture of liquid crystals. Our mean-field model gives the phase diagram of the nematic, smectic A and smectic C phases near the NAC point. We have fitted our model to the experimentally observed data. From this fitting, we conclude that our mean-field model explains correctly the experimentally observed behavior of a mixed liquid crystalline system near the NAC point.
