Cell/Tissue Microenvironment Engineering and Monitoring in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and In Vitro Tissue Models
Vrana, Nihal Engin; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; McGuinness, Garrett Brian; Ndreu-Halili, Albana (2014-01-01)
Embryonic stem cell-derived motoneurons provide a highly sensitive cell culture model for botulinum neurotoxin studies, with implications for high-throughput drug discovery.
Kiriş, Erkan; Burnett, JC; Kota, KP; Koh, DC; Wanner, LM; Torres-Melendez, E; Gussio, R; Tessarollo, L; Bavari, S (Elsevier BV, 2011-05-01)
Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) inhibit cholinergic synaptic transmission by specifically cleaving proteins that are crucial for neurotransmitter exocytosis. Due to the lethality of these toxins, there are elevated concerns regarding their possible use as bioterrorism agents. Moreover, their widespread use for cosmetic purposes, and as medical treatments, has increased the potential risk of accidental overdosing and environmental exposure. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop novel modalities to counter ...
Cell detection using a CMOS image sensor with modified pixel structure suitable for bio-chemical surface activation
Musayev, Javid; Adiguzel, Yekbun; Külah, Haluk; Akın, Tayfun (2013-04-02)
This paper presents a CMOS image sensor with a 32 x 32 pixel array suitable for cell capture, detection, and quantification. Pixels measuring 15 mu m x 15 mu m have a modified structure, suitable for post-CMOS electroless gold plating, which enables surface activation for cell capture without the need for any intermediate layer. This structure also increases the detection probability of captured cells as opposed to non-captured ones, owing to a special light mask (metal shield) implemented on pixels. The li...
Fetal brain and placental programming in maternal obesity: A review of human and animal model studies
Shook, Lydia L.; Kışlal, Sezen; Edlow, Andrea G. (2020-08-01)
Both human epidemiologic and animal model studies demonstrate that prenatal and lactational exposure to maternal obesity and high-fat diet are associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Neurodevelopmental outcomes described in offspring of obese women include cognitive impairment, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety and depression, disordered eating, and propensity for reward-driven behavior, among others. This review synthesizes human and...
