Parking is an inevitable part of car use. A car needs two parking spaces, one is for long duration, where it is parked after all daily errands or activities are carried out-this is around the residential location most of the time, and the other is for short duration while carrying out daily errands or pursuing activities. This paper shows that parking spaces are significantly affected by the urban development and vice versa, as experienced in the case of Istanbul. Carried out in a fast developing and motorizing city Istanbul, the study highlights perplexities of parking behavior when streets are regarded as de facto free parking spaces for privately owned vehicles and parking policies. A model, accounting for night-time parking location choice of households among three alternatives: On-street parking, Off-street private parking and Paid parking, is developed in this study. It is concluded that without controlling parking behavior and regulating land-use and transport policies, parking problems will reach to a point of no solution under mass motorization.

Drivers have an important place in the traffic system when the human factor is taken into consideration. Drivers from different cultures are exposed to different values, norms, and traffic systems, and these differences may form various driver behaviors. Thus, traffic climate and individual values can impact driver behaviors. In this study, the relationships between Schwartz's individual values and traffic climate dimensions were examined. Clusters were then created from the traffic climate dimensions and i...
Public transport improvement policies : assessment of the role of route and fare integration, modal reorganization with special emphasis to İzmir case
Öncü, Mevlüde Ayça; Babalık, Ela; Department of Urban Policy Planning and Local Governments (2007)
Public transport improvement and new public transport management approaches are accepted as the most effective tools in order to cope with the urban transportation problem threatening sustainable urban life and efficient functioning of urban areas. The need for new solutions to replace, or support, costly new capacities created two new concepts at the two ends of the transportation phenomenon; Travel Demand Management (TDM) on the demand side and Transportation System Management (TSM) at the supply side. Th...
Driver Aggressiveness Detection Using Visual Information from Forward Camera
Kumtepe, Omurcan; Akar, Gözde; Yuncu, Enes (2015-08-28)
Among the human related factors, aggressive driving behavior is one of the major causes of traffic accidents [17]. On the other hand, detection and characterization of driver aggressiveness is a challenging task since there exist different psychological causes behind it. However information about the driver behavior could be extracted from the data that is collected via different sensing devices. This paper presents a method to detect driver aggressiveness using only visual information provided by forward c...
Transit oriented design and urban design: eskişehir case – tram stop oriented
Bahçelioğlu, İrem; Yetişkul Şenbil, Emine; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2017)
Sustainable and public transportation plays a vital role in the cities to eliminate the disadvantages of urban sprawl. Transit oriented development (TOD) is one of the tools which is used to solve this problem. However, the efforts of TOD itself are not enough in order to increase the public transportation demand. TOD reaches significance when it is combined with the urban design since urban design defines both physical and personal factors in the point of creating effective TOD. For this reason, design fac...
Mini autonomous car architecture for urban driving scenarios
Karabulut, Gökhan; Can, Tolga; Department of Computer Engineering (2019)
Autonomous cars capable of driving in city traffic have been long studied in architectures decomposed into perception, planning, and control components. Recent advances in deep learning techniques considerably contributed to the perception component of this approach. These techniques also laid the groundwork for the progress of other approaches such as end-to-end learning of steering commands and driving affordances from camera images. Though these approaches are promising to simplify the overall architectu...
