A practical technique for the detection of cracks emanating from holes was investigated for non-ferrous materials using the eddy current method. This technique is suggested when more appropriate test equipment is not available. An unshielded absolute pencil probe and a meter display instrument were utilized in the study. It was determined that holes with a minimum diameter of 6.5 mm can be tested efficiently for the detection of cracks at least 0.15 mm deep. For the equipment used, the hole depth that can be tested is limited to about 11 mm if access from the other side is not possible. The detection capability was confirmed by an impedance plane display instrument using rotary differential probes. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Three dimensional analysis of periodic cracking in FGM coatings under thermal stresses
Dağ, Serkan; Erdogan, Fazil (2006-10-18)
A three dimensional finite element method is used to examine periodic surface cracking problem in a functionally graded coating subjected to transient thermal loads. The ceramic/metal FGM coating is assumed to contain periodic semi-elliptical cracks and to be perfectly bonded to a homogeneous substrate. The composite structure is subjected to transient residual/thermal stresses. Temperature and displacement fields are computed using a three dimensional finite element approach. Finite element models are crea...
A moment technique for adsorption rate on metal surfaces of supported catalysts CO adsorption on Pt-Al2O3 washcoated monolith
Dogu, G; Ozkan, G; Doğu, Timur (2001-12-15)
A moment technique was developed for the investigation of adsorption on metal surfaces of supported catalysts. The technique was applied to the evaluation of adsorption rate parameters of CO on a Pt-Al2O3 washcoated monolith. The adsorption rate constants evaluated in the temperature range 273-316 K showed significant decrease with an increase in surface coverage. Results of pulse response experiments corresponding to zero coverage gave the apparent activation energy for adsorption as 21 kJ/mol. This method...
A modified applied element model for the simulation of plain concrete behaviour
Soysal, Berat Feyza; Arıcı, Yalın; Tuncay, Kağan (2022-08-01)
A modified applied element model to simulate the behaviour of plain concrete continuum structures including discrete cracking is proposed in this study. In the classical applied element model, Poisson effects are fully ignored. To remediate this issue, diagonal elements are introduced to include the Poisson effect, and the constitutive parameters are rigorously determined using the Cauchy-Born rule and the hyper-elastic theory. The formulation is validated for linear elastic problems and the consistency and...
An approach to measure trace elements in particles collected on fiber filters using EDXRF
ÖZTÜRK, FATMA; Zararsız, Abdullah; Kırmaz, Rıdvan; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2011-01-15)
A method developed for analyzes of large number of aerosol samples using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and its performance were discussed in this manuscript. Atmospheric aerosol samples evaluated in this study were collected on cellulose fiber (Whatman-41) filters, employing a Hi-Vol sampler, at a monitoring station located on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. between 1993 and 2001. Approximately 1700 samples were collected in this period. Six-hundred of these samples were analyzed by instru...
A robust algorithm for configurational-force-driven brittle crack propagation with R-adaptive mesh alignment
MIEHE, CHRISTIAN; Gürses, Ercan (2007-10-08)
The paper considers a variational formulation of brittle fracture in elastic solids and proposes a numerical implementation by a finite element method. On the theoretical side, we outline a consistent thermodynamic framework for crack propagation in an elastic solid. It is shown that both the elastic equilibrium response as well as the local crack evolution follow in a natural format by exploitation of a global Clausius-Planck inequality in the sense of Coleman's method. Here, the canonical direction of the...
