In this study, first, the factor structure of the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory (ECR) was examined, and then, the predictive power of attachment categories and dimensions were compared by employing the three scales commonly used in measuring adult attachment styles and dimensions (the Relationships Questionnaire, RQ, the Relationships Scales Questionnaire, RSQ, and the ECR). University students (N = 272) completed a set of questionnaires consisting of the three attachment measures and seven scales theoretically associated with attachment styles (self-esteem, self-concept clarity, trait anxiety, concern over separation, pleasing others, concem for approval, and autonomy). Results revealed that the anxiety and avoidance dimensions of attachment were reliably measured by the ECR. Overall, analyses using the attachment categories demonstrated that the differences between the attachment styles on the dependent variables were consistent with the premises of the Four Category Model for all scales. Results of the discriminant function analyses on the attachment groups showed that the attachment groups formed on the basis of the ECR dimensions were more congruent with the Four-Category Model than the attachment groups formed using the subscales of the RQ and the RSQ. Regression analyses using attachment dimensions and their interactions as predictors of the dependent variables revealed that attachment dimensions accounted for much larger proportions of variances and had stronger predictive power than the attachment categories. Findings were discussed on the basis of previous studies and it was recommended that future researchers utilize dimensional analyses and measures.

Effects of attachment styles on prefrontal cortex during naturalistic social interaction: An fNIRS based hyperscanning study
Yargıçoğlu, Burcu; Çakır, Murat Perit; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2022-1)
This study investigates possible differences of prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity as well as brain-to-brain coordination across PFCs of dyads during naturalistic social interaction from an attachment theory perspective by employing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning. Male participants with right-hand dominance (N=48) were administered Turkish Experiences in Close Relationship Scale (Sumer, 2006) for assessment of predominant adult attachment styles (Secure:27, Insecure: 21) and playe...
The Role of capitalization and mattering among married couples: an attachment theory perspective
Kırımer, Fulya; Sümer, Nebi; Department of Psychology (2014)
The current study investigated the mediating role of perceived partner responses toward capitalization attempts (PRCA) and perceived mattering (PM) on the association between attachment dimensions (i.e., anxiety and avoidance) and relationship functioning (i.e., satisfaction and communication quality) among married couples. Considering the gender roles and culture-specific patterns, it was expected that PRCA and PM mediate the link between avoidance and dissatisfaction, and the link between anxiety and conf...
Sensorial experiences during instrumental interaction: a study on tea makers and vacuum cleaners
Coşkun, Merve; Şener Pedgley, Bahar; Department of Industrial Design (2014)
This study investigated the dimensions of users’ positive and negative appraisals of sensorial experiences with products in the context of instrumental interaction. By taking multisensory nature of interaction into consideration, the specific roles of sensorial information (i.e. visual, tactile, kinesthetic, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory) in product perception, cognition, and experience were examined by decomposing product experiences into smaller interactions. The fieldwork was designed to collect the...
Are avoidant wives and anxious husbands unhappy in a collectivist context? Dyadic associations in established marriages
Harma, Mehmet; Sümer, Nebi (2016-01-02)
We examined culturally relevant gender differences in the attachment dimensions and their dyadic associations with relationship functioning using a large sample (N = 1228). Considering that attachment avoidance is culturally incongruent with Turkish culture and there exist a sharp gender role difference in marriage, we anticipated that avoidance for women and anxiety for men would be strong dyadic predictors of satisfaction and conflict among married couples. Dyadic analyses revealed that attachment dimensi...
INSECURE ATTACHMENT AND RELATIONSHIP SATISFACTION: TESTING THE BUFFERING ROLES OF MINDFULNESS, SELF-COMPASSION, AND COGNITIVE DEFUSION
Taşkesen, Nureda; Barutçu Yıldırım, Kadriye Funda; Department of Educational Sciences (2022-7)
This study aims to test a multiple-mediation model which examines mindfulness, relationship mindfulness, self-compassion, and cognitive defusion as possible mediators of the relationship between attachment insecurity and romantic relationship satisfaction. The sample consisted of 521 emerging adults in a romantic relationship for at least one month (70% female, 27% male, and 3% non-binary). Their ages ranged from 19 to 29 years old (M = 22.52, SD = 2.45). In data collection, Relationship Assessment Scale, E...
