'Complete Neutrality' or 'Controlled Enmity'? The Role of the Turkish Press during the Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935-36
Dogar, Mehmet (Brill, 2020-03-01)
This article examines the relationship between the Turkish government and the Turkish press by taking the Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935-36 as a case study. The Turkish press attached much importance to the conflict and covered two main issues: the increasingly insecure environment in world politics and how Turkey should position itself in the face of these changing dynamics. Emphasising the divergences between the rhetoric of the government and the coverage of the press about these issues, this article argues...
'Aesthetics' Of Aesthetics: Aesthetic Question In Architectural And Urban Discourses
Teymur, Necdet (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 1981)
'Exclusive recognition': the new dimensions of the question of ethnicity and nationalism in Turkey
Saraçoğlu, Cenk (2009-01-01)
This article aims to unravel some common aspects of the recently intensifying antipathy towards migrants from Eastern Anatolia in certain Turkish cities. Based on the fact that every manifestation of this antipathy in everyday life involves a logic that recognizes and excludes these migrants as 'Kurdish', the article conceptualizes these sentiments as 'exclusive recognition'. This concept helps us see the fact that the rising anti-migrant discourse is not an ideology that is imposed by the state or any othe...
Smart Cities as Drivers of a Green Economy
Balaban, Osman ( Elsevier: Academic Press, 2019-09-01)
The current economic system is highly unsustainable. It has created an economic crisis and an ecological crisis, which seriously threaten the future of our planet and societies. Both crises could be overcome by transitioning to a green economy. The green economy concept is based on the idea that the conventional model of economic development is socially and environmentally unsustainable, and argues that we should move toward a new economy, which respects natural boundaries and ecological limits, and respond...
'Good propagation' and duality invariance constraints on scalar, gauge vector and gravity actions
Deser, Stanley; McCarthy, Jim; Sarıoğlu, Bahtiyar Özgür (IOP Publishing, 1999-03-01)
We present some consequences of non-anomalous propagation requirements on various massless fields. Among the models of nonlinear electrodynamics we show that only the Maxwell and Born-Infeld models also obey duality invariance. Separately we show that, for actions depending only on the F-mu nu(2) invariant, the permitted models have L similar to root 1 + F-2. We also characterize acceptable vector-scalar systems. Finally, we find that wide classes of gravity models share with the Einstein model the null nat...
