An international comparison of Turkish coal mining industry safety performance

2001-11-21
A comparison of safety performance indices in coal mine industry in Turkey and some other major countries will enable authorities to develop strategies in order to take the relevant precautions and eventually improve coal industry in Turkey. This paper presents a comparative study on the basis of accident information for the last decades of Turkish coal mining industry. Turkish data contains two components: public lignite coal recordings and data including both lignite and hard coal produced by public and private sectors. The collected data for all related countries was averaged across a number of years, usually last ten years, in an attempt to remove some of the statistical variations resulting from the small annual differences, Basic safety performance values such as accident frequency rate and fatality frequency rate are illustrated graphically in the form of bar charts for each million tons of coal produced, thousand employees at work and million man-hours of exposure. When only lignite figures are considered, Turkish coal mining sector compares well with the safety performance figures of other countries. In the case of general coal values, however, Turkish coal industry was seen to be one of the most hazardous coal mining industries among the countries evaluated in this study.

The merit order effect of wind and river type hydroelectricity generation on Turkish electricity prices
Acar, Berkan; Selcuk, Orhun; Dastan, Seyit Ali (Elsevier BV, 2019-09-01)
The environmental concerns and dependency on gas imports push Turkish policy makers to find ways of increasing the share of renewable sources in electricity generation. Providing incentives for renewable energy in the form of feed-in-tariffs is one of the measures to achieve this goal. Basing on the data of Turkish electricity market operator, we quantified the magnitude of the price effects of wind and river type hydro generations on hourly average of day-ahead prices. We find that wind and river type hydr...
The analysis of total factor efficiency in the public lignite mining organizations in turkey
Çimen, Selahattin; Güyagüler, Tevfik; Department of Mining Engineering (2011)
In recent years, the risks created by the import of energy on the security of energy supply has encouraged countries to utilize local resources to a greater extend, and for many countries including Turkey coal is at the top of the local resources. However, it is not sufficient for countries to have an energy resource itself. Intens competition in today's globalized system requires the resources to be produced and utilized in the most economical manner. The supply of the resources to the market in a competit...
Analysis of the best available techniques for wastewaters from a denim manufacturing textile mill

The present study was undertaken as the first plant scale application and evaluation of Best Available Techniques (BAT) within the context of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control/Industrial Emissions Directive to a textile mill in Turkey. A "best practice example" was developed for the textile sector; and within this context, BAT requirements for one of the World's leading denim manufacturing textile mills were determined. In order to achieve a sustainable wastewater management; firstly, a detail...

This study examines the authority of local administrations in need of local-level preparedness, community participation and training to have efficient and sustainable disaster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster risk management (DRM) in Turkey. The enduring debates between the local authorities and central government in Turkey, history of regulations for disasters and local governments involving the discussion regarding the recently published local government law; national and international DRM improvements a...
A Cross-Country Dynamic Panel Data Analysis For Turkey's Future Electricity Demand And Linear Programming Models For Generating Pathways Under Various Objectives
Ercan, Hakan; Önenli, Özge (2022-11-08)
This paper studies whether Turkey can meet its growing electricity demand by relying more on renewables, instead of increasing the use of its local coal resources. Our quantitative analysis proceeds in two stages. In the first stage, we provide projections for the future electricity demand of Turkey through 2040 by using a dynamic balanced panel data model of 41 countries. In the second stage, we develop linear programming models to study realistic and reasonable scenarios representing three probable...
