Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and its application towards measurements in biology
Özer, Zeynep; Altan, Hakan; Department of Physics (2016)
Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has proved to be an exceptional tool in measurements of biological and non-biological materials. The main reason why this method is preferred is that terahertz waves are typically harmless on samples due to the low excitation energy. Furthermore, one is able to extract parameters such as the absorption and refractive index easily directly from the data without using modeling. The low energy of the terahertz wave also makes it a useful tool for characterizing dyna...
Terahertz spectroscopy of dicyanobenzenes: Anomalous absorption intensities and spectral calculations
Esentürk, Okan; Heilweil, E. J. (2007-07-06)
Terahertz absorption spectra of three isomeric structures of dicyanobenzene in chloroform solution and solid phase at 298 K are reported. These spectra exhibit enhanced absorption in low THz range compared to most organic systems because of strong coupling to phonon modes. Molecular vibrational spectral calculations show strong correlation with the experiment especially for solution spectra. All intramolecular modes were assigned and intermolecular modes identified. Out-of-plane intramolecular modes at low ...
Terahertz study of 1,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine by time-domain and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
Huang, F; Schulkin, B; Altan, Hakan; Federici, JF; Gary, D; Barat, R; Zimdars, D; Chen, M; Tanner, DB (2004-12-06)
This letter describes the use of THz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) applied in transmission to the secondary explosive 1,3,5 trinitro-s-triazine. Samples were also subjected to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy over the same range for comparison. A detailed spectroscopy study is presented. General agreement between results from both methods confirms the absorption features found. A comparison study with computer molecular simulations shows that THz-TDS is sensitive to collective modes or vibrational m...
Terahertz mobility measurements on poly-3-hexylthiophene films: Device comparison, molecular weight, and film processing effects
Esentürk, Okan; Heilweil, Edwin J. (2008-01-15)
We directly compare relative carrier mobilities in semiconducting organic polymer films measured using noncontact optical pump terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy to those reported in electrical device studies. Relative transient signal amplitude measurements of photoinjected carrier mobility as a function of poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) molecular weight correlate directly with electrical device test values, indicating that the THz method shows promise as a rapid material screening approach. We also present ...
Terahertz spectroscopy of explosives and simulants - RDX, PETN, sugar and L-tartaric acid
Konek, Christopher; WİLKİNSON, John; Esentürk, Okan; HEİLWEİL, Edwin; KEMP, Michael (2009-04-15)
We report on the transmission and reflection terahertz (THz) spectra of the high explosives RDX and PETN. These common military explosives are compared to simulants L-tartaric acid and sucrose, respectively. The use of these simulants enables researchers to develop many aspects of THz spectroscopy for explosives detection without the need for live explosives. Further, we discuss the effect of sample preparation on the THz spectrum of RDX and demonstrate that experiments performed on different terahertz inst...
