This article discusses the script changes in Azerbaijan and how these changes have been articulated to the discourses of national identity, development and modernization. The aim of this article is to analyze the script changes in Azerbaijan in different political and cultural processes and the impact of these changes on the discussions of national identity. This analysis mainly refers to the period between 1921-1992 and discusses the articulation of discourses of modernization and development to the definitions of national identity and national language. Script changes can be defined as symbolic acts to reject past political and cultural heritage and as attempts to diminish their impact on the process of new transformations.
