Ohmic heating was revived in the 1980s, because it showed promise in particulate sterilization. Although that dream has not yet been fully realized, a number of advances have been made regarding fundamental understanding of the process. This has included fundamental fluid mechanics and heat transfer phenomena, microbial death kinetics, and the monitoring of temperatures, microbiological, and chemical changes within solids.

LANTHANUM DOPED DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE MIXED WITH GRAPHENE OXIDE BONE CEMENTS AS A POTENTIAL MATERIAL IN BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS
Motameni, Ali; Evis, Zafer; -, -; Department of Engineering Sciences (2021-9-06)
In this thesis, mesoporous particles of β-tricalcium phosphate (βTCP, βCa3(PO4)2) and lanthanum (La) doped βTCP were synthesized by wet precipitation method attached with a microwave refluxing system. Pure dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and La modified dicalcium phosphate (La-DCP) bone cements were prepared based on acid/base reaction between βTCP (or La- βTCP) and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) in the presence of water. DCP bone cements were also mixed with 1.5-3.5wt.% of graphene oxide (GO). The obta...
Synthesis and characterization of rare earth borophosphates
Özdil, Yasemin; Kızılyallı, Meral; Department of Chemistry (2004)
In this thesis, solid state reactions of Ln2O3, Y2O3, B2O3 and (NH4)2HPO4 were investigated to synthesize LnBP2O8 (Ln= Dy, Ho, Er) and YBP2O8 type of borophosphates which were not reported before. The products were analyzed by XRD, IR, DTA, SEM and EDX methods. In the first part of this thesis, synthesis of YBP2O8 through the solid state reaction of Y2O3 + 4(NH4)2HPO4 + B2O3 have been studied in the range 800-1140 °C. Orthophosphates of Dysprosium, Holmium, Erbium and Yttrium have tetragonal xenotime (YPO4)...
Alkaline solubilization and microwave irradiation as a combined sludge disintegration and minimization method
Doğan, Ilgın; Sanin, Faika Dilek (Elsevier BV, 2009-5)
Commonly used pretreatment method of alkaline solubilization (using NaOH) and a relatively new technology of microwave (MW) irradiation (160 degrees C) were combined as a pretreatment method of waste activated sludge (WAS) in this study. First alkaline and MW pretreatment methods were examined separately, then their combination for different conditions was investigated in terms of their effect on COD solubilization, turbidity and capillary suction time (CST). For combined pretreatments, soluble COD to total...
Nafion/titanium silicon oxide nanocomposite membranes for PEM fuel cells
DEVRİM, YILSER; Erkan, Serdar; BAÇ, NURCAN; Eroğlu, İnci (2013-04-01)
In the present study, Nafion/Titanium Silicon Oxide (TiSiO4) nanocomposite membranes were prepared by recasting method for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The composite membrane containing 10wt% TiSiO4 had a membrane thickness of 80 mu m. The membrane was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM and XRD results have proven the uniform and homogeneous distribution of TiSiO4 in Nafion, and consequently, the crystalline character of ...
Investigation of adsorption of pesticides by organo-zeolite from wastewater
Lüle, Güzide Meltem; Atalay, M Ümit; Özbayoğlu, Gülhan; Department of Mining Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study was to determine the adsorption capacity of activated carbon and organo-zeolites for removal of pesticides in water. In order to prepare organo-zeolite, two kinds of cationic surfactants, namely, hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) and dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) were used. Adsorption studies of cationic surfactant on zeolite were investigated in respect to initial concentration of cationic surfactant, time, and temperature. It has been found that the best fitted is...
