Benzalkonium chlorides (BACs) are disinfectants widely used in a variety of clinical and environmental settings to prevent microbial infections, and they are frequently detected in nontarget environments, such as aquatic and engineered biological systems, even at toxic levels. Therefore, microbial degradation of BACs has important ramifications for alleviating disinfectant toxicity in nontarget environments as well as compromising disinfectant efficacy in target environments. However, how natural microbial ...
Microbial biodiesel production by direct methanolysis of oleaginous biomass
Thliveros, Panagiotis; Kiran, Esra Uckun; Webb, Colin (Elsevier BV, 2014-04-01)
Biodiesel is usually produced by the transesterification of vegetable oils and animal fats with methanol, catalyzed by strong acids or bases. This study introduces a novel biodiesel production method that features direct base-catalyzed methanolysis of the cellular biomass of oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides Y4. NaOH was used as catalyst for transesterification reactions and the variables affecting the esterification level including catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, solve...
Microbial solubilization of lignites
Gokcay, Celal F; Kolankaya, Nazif; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (Elsevier BV, 2001-08-01)
Biological solubilization and subsequent gasification of lignite samples from three of the largest reserves in this country, which are also characterized by high sulphur contents and low calorific values, were investigated in this project. Several white-rot fungi were screened for their ability to solubilize lignites and Phanerochaete chrysosporium was found to depolymerize Elbistan lignites with 60% efficiency. Acetate served perfectly as the primary carbon source. Whereas, Çan lignites could be depolymeri...
Microbial oil produced from biodiesel by-products could enhance overall production
Kiran, Esra Uckun; Trzcinski, Antoine; Webb, Colin (2013-02-01)
Glycerol and rapeseed meal, two major by-products of biodiesel production, have been tested for possible use as low-cost raw materials for the production of microbial bio-oil using the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides. Using fed-batch fermentation with crude glycerol and a novel nitrogen rich nutrient source derived from rapeseed meal as feed, it was shown that 13 g/L lipids could be produced, compared with 9.4 g/L when crude glycerol was used with yeast extract. When 100 g/L pure glycerol was use...
