A comparative evaluation of anaerobic dechlorination of PCB-118 and Aroclor 1254 in sediment microcosms from three PCB-impacted environments
Kaya, Devrim; İmamoğlu, İpek; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Sowers, Kevin R. (Elsevier BV, 2018-01-05)
Aroclor 1254 (A1254) is the most toxic commercial PCB mixture produced, primarily due to its relatively high concentrations of dioxin-like congeners. This study demonstrates a comparative evaluation of dechlorination of A1254 and PCB-118 by indigenous organohalide respiring bacteria enriched from three PCB impacted sites: Grasse River (GR), NY; Fox River (FR), WI; and Baltimore Harbor (BH), MD. PCB 118 dechlorination rates in GR, BH, and FR was 0.0308, 0.015, and 0.0006 Cl-/biphenyl/day, respectively. A1254...
An extended study on the alu insertion polymorphism in Anatolian human population
Şekeryapan, Ceran; Togan, İnci Zehra; Department of Biology (2005)
In the present study, for estimating the Central Asia contribution to the Anatolia, nine Alu insertion polymorphisms (ACE, PV92, FXIIIB, APO, A25, B65, TPA25, D1, HS4.32 ) in 100 individuals from Anatolia were examined. Alu insertion frequency for these loci were calculated as 0,410; 0,220; 0,579; 0,963; 0,067; 0,667; 0,390; 0,427; and 0,637 respectively and they were found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p<0,05). Observed insertion frequencies of each loci were compared with those of the previous obse...
A comparative genetic analysis of the subterranean termite genus Reticulitermes (Isoptera : Rhinotermitidae)
Austin, JW; Szalanski, AL; Uva, P; Bagneres, AG; Kence, Aykut (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2002-11-01)
DNA sequencing analysis of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase H (COII) region was used to examine genetic variation in the termite genus Reticulitermes Holmgren. We examined 21 species and subspecies from three continents. Sequencing of a 677-bp region of a 780-bp amplicon from 41 individuals and from 17 sequences obtained from GenBank revealed 221 polymorphic sites within the genus. Tajima-Nei distances from species ranged from 0.9 to 12.7%, and parsimony and maximum likelihood analysis revealed seve...
An analysis of tunnel fire characteristics under the effects of vehicular blockage and tunnel inclination
SHAFEE, SINA; Yozgatlıgil, Ahmet (Elsevier BV, 2018-09-01)
It is known that the blockage and inclination conditions of tunnels are among the important factors affecting fire safety considerations, as these factors could change the characteristics of possible fire incidents as well as smoke movement in tunnels. In the present work, we analyze the variations of the tunnel fire burning rate, heat release rate and smoke backlayering as being functions of these two factors. Ethanol pools were used as fire sources in a reduced scale tunnel model with longitudinal ventila...
