The aim of this study is to develop an automatic road extraction algorithm for satellite images. In the road network extraction algorithm, edge detection, segmentation analysis, clustering, vegetation analysis is used. Morphological operations are used in post-processing. Quantitative and visually presented results show that the proposed method is effective for main-road extraction. © 2012 IEEE.

A new algorithm for automatic road network extraction in multispectral satellite images
Karaman, Ersin; Çınar, Umut; Gedik, Ekin; Çetin, Yasemin; Halıcı, Uğur (2012-05-09)
The aim of this study is to develop automatic road extraction algorithm in satellite images. As roads have different width and surface material characteristics in urban and rural areas, a modular approach for road extraction algorithm is desired. In this study, edge detection, segmentation, clustering and vegetation and land cover analyses are used. In order to combine the results of different methods, a score map based on segmentation analysis is constructed. Quantitative and visual results show that this ...
A video tracker system for traffic monitoring and analysis
Ocaklı, Mehmet; Demirekler, Mübeccel; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
In this study, a video tracker system for traffic monitoring and analysis is developed. This system is able to detect and track vehicles as they move through the camera’s field of view. This provides to perform traffic analysis about the scene, which can be used to optimize traffic flows and identify potential accidents. The scene inspected in this study is assumed stationary to achieve high performance solution to the problem. This assumption provides to detect moving objects more accurately, as well as ab...
An automated building extraction model using fuzzy k-nn classifier from monocular aerial images
Şenaras, Çağlar; Karslıoğlu, Mahmut Onur; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
The aim of this study is to develop an automated model to extract buildings from aerial images. The fuzzy k-NN classification method is used to extract the buildings by using color information. Also in the thesis, the advantages of the relevance feedback systems are discussed. The software, BuildingLS, is developed in C#. The model is evaluated in 5 different test areas with more than 700 building.
Road network extraction from high-resolution multi spectral satellite images
Karaman, Ersin; Çetin, Yasemin; Department of Information Systems (2012)
In this thesis, an automatic road extraction algorithm for multi-spectral images is developed. The developed model extracts elongated structures from images by using edge detection, segmentation and clustering techniques. The study also extracts non-road regions like vegetative fields, bare soils and water bodies to obtain more accurate road map. The model is constructed in a modular approach that aims to extract roads with different characteristics. Each module output is combined to create a road score map...
Design and implementation of a search tool for roads on pocket PCs for mobile GIS
Dinçer, Alper; Karslıoğlu, Mahmut Onur; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
The aim of this study is to develop a search tool for roads for mobile GIS application. The satellite image of Ankara is the base map of program. There is also a search option for the roads. The application is based on open source libraries, which are ECW for imagery and SQLite for the database of vector. The application is coded in Embedded Visual C++. The study shows that mobile GIS applications can be prepared by the help of open source libraries. There is no need to buy a commercial product to mobilize ...
