Due to the rapid increase in energy prices as well as increasing environmental awareness, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are becoming more efficient and more compact. Until recently, on-line UPS systems with isolation transformer have been employed to supply critical loads. However, environment-friendly transformerless UPS systems have been rapidly replacing the old technology due to their superior performance, higher efficiency and smaller size attributes. In this paper, the technology (topology, components, control, etc.) of the environment-friendly transformerless UPS systems with the 6-300kVA range will be discussed and their experimental performance, and size/weight information will be provided. Energy savings via the improved efficiency and positive impact on the eco-environment via the material size/weight/manufacturing process reduction will be emphasized.

Optimal and implementable transmission schemes for energy harvesting networks
Özçelik, Fatih Mehmet; Uysal Bıyıkoğlu, Elif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
Progress in energy harvesting technology and the increasing need for the energy efficient and environmentally friendly applications have called for reconsideration of communication systems. This reconsideration results in new problem formulations regarding the recent developments on energy harvesting systems. Recently, optimal strategies for various types of energy harvesting networks have been developed based on different harvesting models. This thesis reports the results of our research to develop the opt...
Thermal bridge detailing in tunnel form buildings with passive house principles
Yılmaz, Derya; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2014)
As a result of depleting fossil fuels, increased energy prices and global warming, the growing importance of energy efficiency given birth to spread construction of energy saving buildings and use of new technologies around the world. Since thermal bridges in buildings may cause excessive heat loss, mold growth and deterioration of indoor air quality; to eliminate thermal bridges becomes very crucial both in existing buildings and in energy efficient buildings. In this thesis, energy demand of a six storey ...
Konut Alanlarında Enerji Etkinliği: Toplu Konut İdaresi Başkanlığı (Toki) Toplu Konut Projeleri Üzerine Eleştirel Bir Değerlendirme
Karaca, Mehmet; Varol, Çiğdem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2012-12-1)
The rapid increase in energy demand and consumption has intensified the necessity of developing new methods to ensure energy efficiency. When heating, cooling, lighting and other equipments in buildings are accounting for 24% of total energy consumption, it is inevitable to take more initiatives to reduce energy consumption in the construction sector. New residential areas cannot anymore be the places, where natural resources are consumed recklessly. They should be designed as livable areas, where preservin...
Optimizing the service policy of a mobile service provider through competitive online solutions to the 0/1 knapsack problem with dynamic capacity /
Erkılıç, Tuğçe; Uysal Bıyıkoğlu, Elif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
Demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly communication systems with energy efficient transmission schemes has increased eminently in the last decades. Resource allocation problems for energy harvesting networks have been studied and many offline solutions have been proposed. An online problem is examined throughout this thesis. Recent industry efforts to provide Internet service to areas deprived of telecommunications infrastructure have been the main inspiration for the studies conducted here. A...
Comparative Power-Delay Performance Analysis of Threshold Logic Technologies
Ercan, Furkan; Muhtaroglu, Ali (2015-03-26)
Recent focus in energy efficiency is motivated with diminishing conventional energy resources, and increasing demand in low power applications with shrinking platform sizes. In this work, various threshold logic technologies are compared with each other in terms of power-delay-product (PDP). Compound CMOS, complementary pass transistor, static NAND gate, full adder, capacitive and differential threshold logic technologies are compared within a developed comparison scenario. Results in UMC180nm technology in...
