Seismic strengthening of masonry infilled r/c frames with steel fiber reinforcement
Sevil, Tuğçe; Canbay, Erdem; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Seismic resistance of many buildings in Turkey is insufficient. Strengthening using R/C infills requires huge construction work. Feasible, easy strengthening techniques are being studied in Structural Mechanics Laboratory of METU. In this project, it was aimed to develop an economical strengthening method. This method is based on addition of steel fibers and/or PP fibers in mortar and application of mortar on masonry wall. Project was sponsored by the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜB...
Strengthening of reinforced concrete frames by using steel bracings
Ağar, Mehmet; Polat, Mustafa Uğur; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
Structures in high seismic risk areas may be susceptible to severe damage in a major earthquake. Structures designed to meet older code requirements may be at even greater risk. When these structures are evaluated with respect to current code criteria, it is observed that they lack of lateral strength and/or ductility. Since safety and economic considerations are major problems, these structures become viable candidates for retrofit and seismic strengthening. For the variety of structures and possible defic...
Anaerobic Digestability and Biogas Production Capacity of Pistachio Processing Wastewater in UASB Reactors
Gur, E.; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2019-08-01)
High volumes of wastewater with considerable levels of organic and phenolic compounds and solid material are produced during pistachio processing. There is not a commonly adopted treatment technology for the wastes produced during pistachio processing. The objective of this study is to evaluate the anaerobic digestability and biogas production capacity of pistachio processing wastewater in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for the first time in the literature. The results indicated that pistac...
Dynamic investigation and rehabilitation of existing railway truss bridge under high speed train loadings for passenger comfort
Mutlu, Gündüz; Yılmaz, Çetin; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In Turkey, big investments are made to improve the existing train lines for use of new high speed trains. Most of the bridges on the existing train lines are typical and in this thesis one of the standard types, the classic steel truss bridge is investigated. This thesis presents the dynamic investigation of standard type existing truss bridge for passenger comfort criteria under the high speed train loadings. Two different computational analysis models have been developed to idealize the vehicle-bridge mod...
Anaerobic treatment of synthetic textile wastewater containing a reactive azo dye
Sen, S; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2003-07-01)
In this study, anaerobic treatment of synthetic textile wastewater containing a reactive azo dye, namely, Remazol Brilliant Violet 5R, was investigated. A fluidized bed reactor (FBR) was used in the study. Before the operation period, start-up of the FBR was completed in 128 days with an immobilized microorganism level of 0.069 g volatile suspended solids per g support material (pumice). Anaerobic treatment of synthetic textile wastewater revealed that 300 mg/L dye was removed in the FBR system. Chemical ox...
