Strengthening of an existing building consistent with the architectural decisions of the original design, is itself a challenging issue as a post-design intervention. However, the situation becomes more critical when it comes to the retrofitting of a historical building. Because of the document value of historical buildings, any intervention on these buildings is a difficult decision with many responsibilities. In this paper the significance of the structural retrofitting is emphasized within the case of strengthening of Church of The Redeemer in the City of Ani in North Eastern Turkey, which is almost structurally unstable, due to damages caused by various natural disasters. In order to demonstrate the structural behavior of partially collapsed church, three dimensional analytical models are developed and response spectrum analyses are carried out against future earthquakes. A conceptual strengthening technique is proposed by enfolding steel skeleton without disturbing historical character of the building.

RE-UNDERSTANDING MULTIDISCIPLINARY BUILDING DESIGN PROCESSES TOWARDS THE CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABILITY: A MULTI-LAYERED DESIGN APPROACH
DURAN, ÖZGE SELEN; Güzer, Celal Abdi; Department of Architecture (2022-7-7)
Sustainability has been one of the most researched and discussed issues within the realm of architecture as a discipline and also within the building design as a practice. However, the focal point in the majority of existing studies concentrate primarily on the design development and building performances based on the components of the design, where pre-design and post-design phases as well as multidimensional contribution of different actors are excluded. Therefore, perceiving and evaluating the entire pr...
SEISMIC SHEAR CAPACITY OF REINFORCED MASONRY PIERS
Sucuoğlu, Haluk (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 1991-07-01)
Masonry buildings have been, and remain, a popular form for economically enclosing space. Whereas such buildings are safe under gravity loads, most are vulnerable to horizontal loads due to earthquakes. Observations following an earthquake and experimental programs have shown that piers between openings are the most vulnerable part of a masonry building, and that the failure of such piers is due in the majority of cases to shear (or diagonal tension). Accordingly, the study described concerns the seismic...
Physical and virtual : transformation of the architectural model
Arpak, Aslı; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2008)
Today the most prosperous interface of architectural design and representation has become the architectural model both in its digital and physical forms. There has been a shift in the design medium from the physical modeling processes to computer-aided design, by way of which the computational design methods have established a much more dynamic, complex, and continual design. In this process, the digital design model now accompanies the whole design as a single entity, contrary to conventional analog modeli...
Assessment of the effects of adaptive reuse interventions on three apartment buildings in Beyoğlu, İstiklal street
Tamer Türer, Füsun; Özgönül, Nimet; Department of Restoration (2020-10-26)
The main subject of the thesis is the relationship between the new function and the carrying capacity of the building in adaptive reuse interventions in the context of conserving the architectural heritage. In adaptive reuse applications, the first thing that should be considered is that the new function is compatible with the building, in order to ensure that the architectural heritage assets are conserved in a healthy way. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to assess the relationship between t...
Artificial intelligence applications in earthquake resistant architectural design: Determination of irregular structural systems with deep learning and ImageAI method
Bingol, Kaan; Akan, Asli Er; ÖRMECİOĞLU, HİLAL TUĞBA; ER, ARZU (Journal of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Gazi University, 2020-01-01)
Although the architectural design process is carried out with the collaboration of experts who are experienced in many different areas from the main preferences to the detailing stage, the major decisions such as plan organization, mass design etc. are taken by the architect. Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs are generally effective after the major decisions of the design are taken. For this reason, it is common for the main decisions, taken during the design process, to be changed during the analysis of...
