Alkylpehnol polyethoxylates (APEOs) and the derivatives of APEOs such as nonylphenol (NP) are generally used as anti-oxidants in many organic compounds including detergents, herbicides and pesticides. In this study, NP effects on growth, egg production and hatching in Japanese quails were investigated. Also, NP effects on plasma vitamin levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined. NP does not affect body weight gain (BWG), feed consumption (FC) and feed conversion ratio for growth (FCRG) in all experimental groups in growing chicks, while it cause a significant decrease in egg production (EP) (P<0.01). Also, the present study showed that NP concentrations, 10, 100 and 500 mu g NP in ethanol (ETOH)/kg-feed, exposure cause an increase in beta-Carotene, Vitamin A and MDA levels (P<0.01). There is also significant rise in Vitamin C level induced by NP in all experimental groups (P<0.01). In conclusion, NP has dramatic effects on EP rate and anti-oxidant system in a concentration dependent manner in Japanese quails.

In this study, the effects of long-term NaCl treatment were investigated in two cultivars of peanut designated as drought-resistant and drought-sensitive. Growth parameters, changes in the concentrations of MDA, H2O2 and proline, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes were determined under salinity stress. Growth parameters indicated the superiority of cv. Florispan to cv. Gazipasa under milder salinity stress treatment. However, comparative analysis of the two cultivars showed that MDA, H2O2, ion leakag...
Ca-D(-)-lactate production from orange baggase via enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation
Baltacı, Saadet Fatma; Hamamcı, Haluk; Department of Food Engineering (2016)
The utilization of low-cost renewable carbohydrate sources for the production of lactic acid which is widely used organic acid in food and polymer industry is a recent strategy in bioeconomy. The objective of this work was to produce Ca-D(-) -lactate as a precursor for D(-)-polylactic acid through the bioconversion of orange bagasse (OB) by enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. The hydrolysis of OB carried with dried and fresh OB, and cellulolytic and pectinolytic enzymes at 55 C, 150 rpm and 4.8 pH to eva...
Effect of hydrogenation conditions on rheological and micro-structural properties of fats
Başkoçak, Altuğ; Mert, Behiç; Department of Food Engineering (2011)
Hydrogenation is one of the most applied techniques in the fats and oils industry to produce wide range of hardened fats with different physical and chemical properties. Each different combination of hydrogenation conditions serves products of different rheological and micro-structural properties. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effect of different industrially available catalysts on rheological and micro-structural properties of hydrogenated fats. Three different catalysts were used ...
Fate and degradation kinetics of nonylphenol compounds in aerobic batch digesters
Omeroglu, Seçil; Sanin, Faika Dilek (2014-11-01)
Nonylphenol (NP) compounds are toxic and persistent chemicals that are not fully degraded either in natural or engineered systems. Current knowledge indicates that these compounds concentrate in sewage sludge. Therefore, investigating the degradation patterns and types of metabolites formed during sludge treatment are important for land application of sewage sludge. Unfortunately, the information on the fate of nonylphenol compounds in sludge treatment is very limited. This study aims to investigate the bio...
A review of the biogeochemical controls on the occurrence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in coals
Wang, Ruwei; Sun, Ruoyu; Liu, Guijian; Yousaf, Balal; Wu, Dun; Chen, Jian; Zhang, Hong (2017-08-01)
The organic matter in coal contains polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) of varying quantities in diverse soluble and insoluble forms. PACs in coal are of special interest for organic geochemical studies because they have been successfully used as biological marker compounds (biomarkers) and indicators of thermal maturity. In addition, they could provide critical information to understand the structural and compositional evolution of the coal organic matters during coalification, and to predict PAC releasin...
