The visual condition assessment grading of bridges is typically done at the bridge site by filling paper forms and taking pictures of the bridge elements in a very time inefficient way, followed by post-processing at the office. The new iPad application allows not only a flexible grading system but also allows to take pictures of the interested elements at the site that can be e-mailed to the owner just seconds after completion of the inspection with proper reporting system. The focus of this paper is given to describe the time-efficient paperless visual inspection system that has been used for the first time in visual inspection of bridges in Turkey, which eliminates the post-processing works at the office. Time savings in terms of visual inspection of bridges is significant compared to the conventional methods.

Improved Seismic Response of Multisimple-Span Skewed Bridges Retrofitted with Link Slabs
Sevgili, Gizem; Caner, Alp (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2009-11-01)
Results of a recent bridge inventory evaluation indicated that about 50% of Turkish highway bridges have more than 30 degrees of skew angle and can be classified as irregular bridges. During the recent major earthquake in Turkey, multisimple-span bridges with continuous decks and link slabs performed well even though these bridges were in the vicinity of the fault line. This study aims to evaluate the improvements in seismic response of skew bridges in terms of forces and displacements when link slabs are a...
Güvenilirlik analiz metodunun köprülere uygulanması (Applicaton of the reliability methods to bridges)
Structural fire safety of standart circular railroad tunnels under different soil conditions
Böncü, Altan; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In many tunnel designs, reinforced concrete tunnel lining design is selected based on construction requirements rather than design loads. A constant cross-section is typically used along a tunnel even if the design loads change from one location to another, especially for tunnels constructed by tunnel boring machines (TBM). Factor of safety against failure is not constant along the length of tunnel and is typically high at shallow depth regions. Factor of safety during a rare event is usually much less than...
Optimization of highway vertical alignment by direct search technique
Özkan, Eray; Acar, Soner Osman; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
During initial stages of geometric design of highway projects, generally a number of alternative horizontal alignments are developed. For any selected alternative horizontal alignment, the basic features of the geometric design are to be completed by establishing the vertical alignment of the roadway. Since for a given horizontal alignment there would be infinite number of vertical alignments conforming to the specifications, it is essential to use an optimization process in order to achieve the most econom...
Experimental investigation of local scour around bridge pier groups
Özalp, Murat Can; Bozkuş, Zafer; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
It is an important task that design engineers in practice predict the local scour around bridge piers as accurately as possible because excessive local scour around bridge piers unbalance and demolish the bridges. Many equations have been proposed previously by various researchers, based on their experimental findings, but no general method has been developed so far due to the complexity of the topic. In the present study two new bridge pier groups were employed to investigate the inclination effect of the ...
