The ductile performance of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) mixtures allows them to have a better fatigue life compared to traditional concrete. In this work, the effects of mineral admixtures and aggregate size on the fatigue performance of ECC under bending were experimentally investigated. In addition, the failure probabilities under fatigue loading were also determined using Weibull distribution. Finally, in order to shorten the process of fatigue testing, a prediction method for fatigue life of ECC mixtures was proposed. It was found out that the use of ground granulated blast furnace slag instead of fly ash and the use of a larger aggregate size both reduced the fatigue life of the original ECC mixture (ECC-M45). Moreover, the fatigue life estimated using the proposed method was in a good agreement with the experimentally determined ones.

Sensitivity Analysis of Distortion of Carburized Steel Shafts Using Computer Simulations
Yazır, Büşra; Evcil, Elif; Yıldız, Seçil; Davut, Kemal; Şimşir, Caner (null; 2016-12-01)
Carburizing and subsequent quenching heat treatments are commonly used industrial processes to improve the properties and performance of steel shafts. Undesired dimensional and shape changes (distortion) related to these treatments are still the most frequent reason for expensive and time consuming corrective operations, low performance during service and even product rejection. The major aim of this study is to identify the suitable control parameters for subsequent optimization of the carburized quenching...
Seismic strengthening of rectangular reinforced concrete columns using fiber reinforced polymers
ÖZCAN, OKAN; Binici, Barış; Ozcebe, Guney (2010-04-01)
In recent years, fiber-reinforced polymers have been widely utilized to improve the seismic performance of deficient RC columns. In this study, the flexural behavior of CFRP strengthened rectangular RC columns with plain bars and insufficient confining steel was investigated Five specimens, representing a typical deficient building column with poor transverse reinforcement detailing and low concrete strength, were tested under cyclic displacement excursions and constant axial load. The beneficial effect of ...
Toughening of Polylactide by Bio-Based and Petroleum-Based Thermoplastic Elastomers
Meyva, Y.; Kaynak, Cevdet (2015-11-01)
The purpose of this study was to improve toughness of inherently very brittle polylactide (PLA) without sacrificing strength and thermal properties, so that biopolymer PLA could be used in engineering applications. For this purpose, PLA was blended with various amounts of two different thermoplastic elastomers; TPU (petroleum-based thermoplastic polyurethane) and TPE (bio-based thermoplastic polyester). Melt blending and specimen shaping were achieved by using a twin-screw extruder and injection molder, res...
Mechanical Performance of Resol Type Phenolic Resin/Layered Silicate Nanocomposites
Tasan, C. Cem; Kaynak, Cevdet (Wiley, 2009-03-01)
Clay addition has been shown to affect polymer resins positively in terms of several physical and chemical properties, including mechanical performance, high temperature endurance and durability. These increases are limited only to relatively low concentrations of reinforcement phase, but at these low concentrations polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites (P/LS NC) have shown to exhibit higher mechanical performance than fiber reinforced polymer composites. This is among the several reasons that make P/LS N...
Nanomaterial-Enhanced All-Solid Flexible Zinc-Carbon Batteries
Hiralal, Pritesh; Imaizumi, Shinji; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Matsumoto, Hidetoshi; Minagawa, Mie; Rouvala, Markku; Tanioka, Akihiko; Amaratunga, Gehan A. J. (2010-05-01)
Solid-state and flexible zinc carbon (or Leclanche) batteries are fabricated using a combination of functional nanostructured materials for optimum performance. Flexible carbon nanofiber mats obtained by electrospinning are used as a current collector and cathode support for the batteries. The cathode layer consists of manganese oxide particles combined with single-walled carbon nanotubes for improved conductivity. A polyethylene oxide layer containing titanium oxide nanoparticles forms the electrolyte laye...
