Alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEs) are widely used as nonionic surfactants. Nonylphenol (NP), one of the derivatives of APEs, has been found in the aquatic environment in ranges from nanograms per liter to milligrams per liter. In this study, juvenile rainbow trout were exposed to 0 (control), 66, 220, or 660 mug NP/L for up to 28 days. Fish remained healthy under NP exposures of 0, 66, and 220 mug/L for the length of the experiment. All fish died after 4 days of exposure to 660 mug NP/L. Time-dependent NP bioaccumulation was detected in the tissues of fish exposed to 220 mug NP/L (P < 0.05) and histopathological changes were observed in the livers of fish exposed to 220 mug NP/L. Furthermore, an increase in the activity of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was found in the liver of fish exposed to 220 mug NP/L for I week (P<0.05). There was an increase in GST activity in the liver of fish exposed to 66 mug NP/L but it did not occur before 2 weeks of exposure to NP. The GST activity then decreased in a time-dependent manner in treatment groups, and this decrease was lower in the livers of fish treated with 66 and 220 mug NP/L than in control fish after 3 weeks of exposure (P<0.05). These results indicated that sublethal doses of NP were accumulating in the bodies of the fish and causing histopathological. and biochemical changes in the livers of rainbow trout. Studying Tunicata WBR Using Botrylloides anceps
Karahan, Arzu; Öztürk, Esra; Temiz , Berivan; Blanchoud, Simon (Springer, London/Berlin , 2022-03-01)
Tunicates are marine filter-feeding invertebrates that can be found worldwide and which are the closest phylogenetic group to the vertebrates (Craniata). Of particular interest, colonial tunicates are the only known chordates that can undergo Whole-Body Regeneration (WBR) via vascular budding. In Botrylloides anceps, a fully functional adult regenerates from a fragment of the vascular system in around 2 weeks after amputation. In this chapter, we present protocols to collect B. anceps colonies, confirm thei...
Combined effects of the 4-nonylphenol and fish kairomones on the survival, morphology and life history traits of Daphnia magna Straus
Özcan, Hatice Elif; Beklioğlu, Meryem; Togan, İnci; Department of Biology ()
Daphnia has evolved morphological and life history defenses against predators and these appear to be mediated by chemicals (kairomones) released by the predator. Furthermore, anthropogenic stressors including alkylphenols have been shown to affect several characteristics of Daphnia. Daphnia magna that were grown in the fish-conditioned water and nonfish- conditioned water were exposed to 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, 0.15, 0.5 mg l'1 NP concentrations in the acute toxicity and 0.001, 0.005, 0.01 mg l"1 NP concentratio...
Improving gelation properties of fish gelatin by nonthermal processes
Sezer, Pürlen; Alpas, Hami; Department of Food Engineering (2019)
Gelatin is mostly obtained from skin, bone or connective tissues of bovine or porcine land animals. Gelatin is commonly used in confectionery products as the main gelling agent and as a hydrocolloid and stabilizer in liquid food systems. Due to religious preferences, helal gelatin has started to be very common in Middle Eastern countries and bovine gelatin is mainly utilized for that purpose. Gelatin could also be obtained from fish which is very abundant in nature however it has weak gelation ability. Ther...
Population genetics features of an invasive Tunicate time series samples in a central Californian marina
Karahan, Arzu; Paz, Guy; Rinkevich, Baruch (2015-08-07)
Despite their simple appearance, the tunicates (accepted as ancestors group to the Chordata) are marine vertebrate animals. Some tunicates live as solitary individuals, but others replicate by budding and become colonies. Most adult tunicates are sessile and others swim in the pelagic zone. The earliest unequivocal species of tunicate appeared in the fossil records in the early Cambrian period. Over the past few decades, some tunicates have been invading coastal waters in many countries. We in...
