Thirty-four Turkish barley (Hordeum vulgare) varieties were tested for the presence of resistance genes (R-genes) to powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei) using the "leaf segment test" with nine isolates of the fungus. The most commonly found R-gene was Mla8, while a combination of R-genes Mlg and Ml(CP) was found in three varieties (Tokak 157/37, Beysehir 98, Konevei 98). The gene Mlh was found in four varieties (Obruk 86, Anadolu 86, Cildir 02, Ozdemir 05), while no R-gene was found in three varieties (Hamidiye 85, Yesevi 93, Bulbul 89). No clear inferences could be made for the partly-resistant varieties Gemici 7243, Yea 793.12 and Akhisar 98 using the test isolates selected, which suggests the presence of still unidentified R-genes. Overall, 10 previously characterized R-genes for powdery mildew (Mla8, MI(La), Mlg, Ml(CP), Mlh, Mlat, Mla1, M1h, Mla7, Mlra) were present in Turkish barley varieties, along with some other(s) still to be identified.

Evaluation of photosynthetic performance of wheat cultivars exposed to boron toxicity by the JIP fluorescence test
Oz, M. T.; TURAN, ÖZLEM; Kayihan, C.; EYİDOĞAN, FÜSUN; EKMEKÇİ, YASEMİN; YÜCEL, MUSTAFA; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni (Institute of Experimental Botany, 2014-12-01)
The changes in growth and photosynthetic performance of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (Bolal-2973 and Atay-85) differing in their sensitivity to boron (B) toxicity were investigated under toxic B conditions. Eight-day old seedlings were exposed to highly toxic B concentrations (5, 7.5, and 10 mM H3BO3) for 5 and 9 days. Fast chlorophyll a fluorescence kinetics was determined and analysed using JIP test. Growth parameters, tissue B contents, and membrane damage were measured at two stress durati...
Pollen morphology of Hymenosphace and Aethiopis sections of the genus Salvia (Lamiaceae) in Turkey

Palynological characteristics of 30 Salvia taxa in sections Hymenosphace and Aethiopis from Turkey were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. S. aethiopis (sect. Aethiopis) has the smallest pollen while S. blepharochlaena (sect. Hymenosphace) has the largest pollen. The basic shape of the pollen grains in most taxa is suboblate, oblate-spheroidal, or prolate-spheroidal to spheroidal; however, subprolate pollen grains are occasionally are found in S. cassia of sect. Aethiopis. Hexacolpate p...
Experimental study of solute transport and extraction by a single root in soil
Kim, J; Chang, YS; Corapcioglu, MY; Drew, MC (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-02-01)
The fate of C-14-2,4,6-trinitrotoluene ([U-C-14]TNT) in soil/plant systems was studied using onion (Allium cepa L.) plants with only a single root. It was found that the single roots grew exponentially and that the rate of water uptake of the onion plants increased exponentially, as well. The concentration of [U-C-14] in the roots at first increased and then appeared to reach a steady state, while the [U-C-14] concentration in the leaves was found to increase linearly with time. The [U-C-14] concentration i...
Note: Pyrethroid resistance and possible involvement of glutathione S-transferases in Helicoverpa armigera from Turkey
Ugurlu, Sakine; Konus, Metin; Isgor, Belgin; İşcan, Mesude (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-01-01)
An introductory study was conducted to investigate the pyrethroid resistance of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) strains in Turkey, collected from cotton fields in the Adana and Antalya provinces, through two different synthetic pyrethroid insecticides: lambda-cyhalothrin and esfenvalerate. In addition, the roles of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in this resistance mechanism were analyzed. It was found that whereas resistance ratios for lambda-cyhalothrin (LD50 levels) were 3- and 9...
ANALYSIS OF PLASMIDS MEDIATING ANT (2'') AND AAC(3)-II BASED GENTAMICIN RESISTANCE IN CLINICAL ISOLATES OF ENTEROBACTERIACEAE
Kocabıyık, Semra (Elsevier BV, 1989-07-01)
The genetics of ANT(2″) and AAC(3)-II mediated gentamicin resistance in Gram-negative bacteria obtained from Hacettepe University Hospital in Turkey, was studied. The plasmid DNA analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis revealed a heterogeneous plasmid population. Conjugal transfer appeared to be an efficient mechanism for the dissemination of resistance to gentamicin/tobramycin/kanamycin/streptomycin/chloramphenicol/cephalothin, which was the common resistance pattern in the population. Plasmids of 46, 60, ...
