Cyclic behavior of Adapazarı silt and clay mixtures
Pekcan, Onur; Çetin, Kemal Önder; Bakır, Bahadır Sadık (null; 2004-01-07)
Within the confines of this paper, it is intended to understand cyclic behavior of clayey silt and silty clay mixtures, sampled from Adapazarı–Turkey. For this purpose, series of cyclic triaxial tests were performed on the samples retrieved from five selected soil sites, where buildings founded on these soils exhibited significant foundation displacements. After consolidating samples to 0.50 atm. cyclic loads were applied to simulate 1999 Kocaeli-Turkey earthquake shaking. Volumetric strains were recorded b...

Cyclic sedimentation across the Permian-Triassic boundary (Central Taurides, Turkey)
Unal, E; Altıner, Demir; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Ozkan-Altiner, S (2003-06-01)
The best preserved Permian - Triassic boundary beds in Turkey are found in the Hadim region of the central Taurides. The succession is exposed in one of the allochthonous units of the Tauride Belt, the Aladag Unit, whose stratigraphy includes beds ranging from the Devonian to the Cretaceous systems. In the Aladag Unit, the Permian - Triassic boundary beds are entirely composed of carbonates. The Permian portion of these beds belongs to the Paradagmarita Zone, whereas the lowermost Triassic contains the Lowe...
TRACE-ELEMENT COMPOSITION OF THE BLACK-SEA AEROSOLS
HACISALIHOGLU, G; BALKAS, TI; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; HERMAN, DH; OLMEZ, I; TUNCEL, G (1991-01-01)
Shipboard aerosol samples collected from the Black Sea atmosphere were analysed for Al, Ca, Mg, Ti, V, Cl, I, Mn and Na, by using instrumental neutron activation technique. Concentrations of elements were intermediate between continental rural sites and remote marine sites. Back-trajectory calculations showed a general easterly flow. Observed enrichments of elements can be attributed to crustal, marine and anthropogenic sources. The (Mn)ner/(V)ner ratio showed differences with trajectory groups. The average...
SWELL BEHAVIOR OF ARID CLIMATE SHALES FROM SAUDI-ARABIA
EROL, AO; DHOWIAN, A (Geological Society of London, 1990-01-01)
Arid and hot climatic conditions influence the development of surficial (superficial) sediments by aggravating the desiccation and weathering processes. Such environmental factors promote the occurrence of expansive soils in the Middle East. This study deals with the nature and extent of expansive soil problems in major development areas of Saudi Arabia where severe damage has been experienced in numerous projects. The expansive soils primarily consist of shales of Tertiary age which occur in a narrow strip...
