1919-1922 döneminde, İngiltere’nin elindeki en güçlü propaganda araçlarından biri The Times gazetesidir. Bunun farkında olan İstanbul ve Ankara hükümetleri bu dönemde The Times gazetesinde lehlerinde yayın yaptırarak İngiliz kamuoyunu etkilemek için çaba sarf etmişlerdir. Ama bu çabaları sonuçsuz kalmış, sonunda gazetenin Türk tarafına yaklaşımındaki değişiklik, İstanbul ve Ankara hükümetlerinin gazeteye sızma faaliyetlerinden değil, Türk Ulusal Kurtuluş Savaşı’nda Kemalist güçlerin zaferleriyle gelen siyasi koşulların değişimi ile mümkün olabilmiştir.
