Bu çalışmada iki farklı radikal demokrasi yaklaşımı, Ch. Mouffe’un “çekişmeci çoğulcu demokrasi” modeli ile S. Benhabib’in “müzakereci demokrasi” modeli karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. Makalede, bu iki modelin metodolojik ve epistemolojik olarak farklı olmalarına rağmen, siyasal proje olarak birbirlerine benzerlik gösterdiği ve Mouffe’un bunlar arasındaki farklılıkları abarttığı fikri savunulmuştur. Her iki düşünür de liberalizm ve demokrasi arasında bir gerilim olduğunu savunmakla birlikte, bu gerilimin kendisinin (Mouffe) ya da bu gerilimin yumuşatılmasının (Benhabib) demokratik açılımları mümkün kıldığını iddia etmektedirler. Artan ve farklılaşan demokratik talep ve kimliklerin tanınması için liberal değer ve kurumların gerekli olduğu ve fakat farklılıkların ortak eylem alanlarının yaratılmasında liberal değer ve kurumların yetersiz kaldığı ve dolayısıyla demokrasi geleneğinin geliştirilmesi gerektiği her ikisinin de ortak sorunsalıdır. Bu nedenle, birbirlerine karşıt olmaktan çok, siyasal liberalizm çerçevesinde birbirlerini tamamlayan iki model olarak görülmeleri ve liberalizmin demokratikleştirilme çabaları olarak değerlendirilmeleri daha doğru olacaktır.
