The electronic band structure of III (in, al, ga)-v (n, as, sb) compounds and ternary alloys
Mohammad, Rezek Mahmoud Salim; Katırcıoğlu, Şenay; Department of Physics (2005)
In this work, the electronic band structure of III (In, Al, Ga) - V (N, As, Sb) compounds and their ternary alloys have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and empirical tight binding (ETB) calculations, respectively. The present DFT-GGA calculations have shown direct band gap structures in zinc-blende phase for InN, InAs, InSb, GaN, and GaAs. However, indirect band gap structures have been obtained for cubic AlN, AlSb and AlAs com- pounds; he...
3d modeling and ground motion scaling for the prediction of seismic demands on the gravity dams
Bybordiani, Milad; Arıcı, Yalın; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Seismic behavior of gravity dams has long been evaluated using the classical two dimensional modeling approach and time history analyses the assumptions for which have been rarely challenged. Formulated for the gravity dams built in wide-canyons, 2D modeling is utilized extensively for almost all concrete dams due to the established procedures as well as the expected computational costs of a three dimensional model. However, a significant number of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams, characterized as such...
Dualisation of supergravity theories
Yılmaz, Nejat Tevfik; Sarıoğlu, Bahtiyar Özgür; Department of Physics (2004)
By using the Kaluza-Klein reduction, the derivation of the maximal supergravities from the D=11 supergravity theory, as well as the Abelian Yang-Mills supergravities from the D=10 type I supergravity theory are discussed. After a thorough review of the symmetric spaces the symmetric space sigma model is studied in detail. The first-order formulation of both the pure and the matter coupled symmetric space sigma model is presented in a general formalism. The dualisation of the non-gravitational Bosonic sector...
Spatially modulated magnetic structure of EuS due to the tetragonal domain structure of SrTiO3
Rosenberg, Aaron J.; Katmis, Ferhat; Kirtley, John R.; Gedik, Nuh; Moodera, Jagadeesh S.; Moler, Kathryn A. (2017-12-15)
The combination of ferromagnets with topological superconductors or insulators allows for new phases of matter that support excitations such as chiral edge modes and Majorana fermions. EuS, a wide-bandgap ferromagnetic insulator with a Curie temperature around 16 K, and SrTiO3 (STO), an important substrate for engineering heterostructures, may support these phases. We present scanning superconducting quantum interference device measurements of EuS grown epitaxially on STO that reveal micron-scale variations...
A density functional theory study on the structural and electronic properties of PbxSbySez (x plus y plus z=2, 3) clusters
Pekoz, Rengin; Erkoç, Şakir (2018-01-30)
The structural and electronic properties of neutral ternary PbxSbySez clusters (x y + z = 2, 3) in their ground states have been explored by means of density functional theory calculations. The geometric structures and binding energies are systematically explored and for the most stable configurations of each cluster type vibrational frequencies, charges on atoms, energy difference between highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, and the possible dissociations channels have been analyzed. ...
