In this study, a segmentation-free approach for offline optical character recognition is presented. The proposed method performs the recognition by extracting the characters from the whole word, avoiding the segmentation process.

Depth assisted object segmentation in multi-view video
Cigla, Cevahir; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın (2008-01-01)
In this work, a novel and unified approach for multi-view video (MVV) object segmentation is presented. In the first stage, a region-based graph-theoretic color segmentation algorithm is proposed, in which the popular Normalized Cuts segmentation method is improved with some modifications on its graph structure. Segmentation is obtained by recursive bi-partitioning of a weighted graph of an initial over-segmentation mask. The available segmentation mask is also utilized during dense depth map estimation ste...
Optical character recognition for cursive handwriting
Arica, N; Yarman Vural, Fatoş Tunay (2002-06-01)
In this paper, a new analytic scheme, which uses a sequence of segmentation and recognition algorithms, is proposed for offline cursive handwriting recognition problem. First, some global parameters, such as slant angle, baselines, and stroke width and height are estimated. Second, a segmentation method finds character segmentation paths by combining gray scale and binary information. Third, Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is employed for shape recognition to label and rank the character candidates. For this purp...
OBJECT RECOGNITION AND LOCALIZATION WITH ULTRASONIC-SCANNING
KIRAGI, H; Ersak, Aydın (1994-04-14)
In this paper an object recognition and localization system based on ultrasonic range imaging to be used in optically opaque environments is introduced. The system is especially designed for robotics applications. The ultrasonic image is acquired by scanning ultrasonic transducers in two dimensions above the area where objects are located. The features that are used for recognition and localization processes are extracted from the outermost boundaries of the objects present in the input scene. Experimental ...
Image segmentation with unified region and boundary characteristics within recursive shortest spanning tree
Esen, E.; Alp, Y. K. (2007-06-13)
The lack of boundary information in region based image segmentation algorithms resulted in many hybrid methods that integrate the complementary information sources of region and boundary, in order to increase the segmentation performance. In compliance with this trend, we propose a novel method to unify the region and boundary characteristics within the canonical Recursive Shortest Spanning Tree algorithm. The main idea is to incorporate the boundary information in the distance metric of RSST with minor cha...
Eye tracking in multimodal comprehension of graphs
Acartürk, Cengiz (2012-07-31)
Eye tracking methodology has been a major empirical research approach for the study of online comprehension processes in reading and scene viewing. The use of eye tracking methodology for the study of diagrammatic representations, however, has been relatively limited so far. The investigation of specific types of diagrammatic representations, such as statistical graphs is even scarce. In this study, we propose eye tracking as an empirical research approach for a systematic analysis of multimodal comprehensi...
