Modeling polychlorinated biphenyl congener patterns and dechlorination in dated sediments from the Ashtabula River, Ohio, USA
İmamoğlu, İpek; Chrıstensen, Er (Wiley, 2002-11-01)
Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were analyzed in four deep, dated sediment cores from the Ashtabula River (OH, USA), for the purpose of identifying relevant PCB sources and congener patterns. The time span for three of the cores is from the mid 1960s to 1998, whereas the fourth has a time span of six years. The total PCB concentrations are in the range of 0.4 to 6.8 mug/g dry weight, with the highest concentrations observed in samples from the 1970s. A factor analysis (FA) model with nonnegative co...
A preliminary investigation of the environmental impact of a thermal power plant in relation to PCB contamination
Gedik, Kadir; İmamoğlu, İpek (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-07-01)
Purpose The most significant application of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is in transformers and capacitors. Therefore, power plants are important suspected sources for entry of PCBs into the environment. In this context, the levels and distribution of PCBs in sediment, soil, ash, and sludge samples were investigated around Seyitomer thermal power plant, Kutahya, Turkey. Moreover, identity and contribution of PCB mixtures were predicted using the chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model.
Effects of anaerobic digestion enhanced by ultrasound pretreatment on the fuel properties of municipal sludge
Çelebi, Emrehan Berkay; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Sanin, Faika Dilek (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-05-01)
In this study, effects of ultrasound pretreatment on combustion characteristics and elemental composition of municipal sludge were examined for energy-based evaluation of sludge pretreatment. Waste activated sludge (WAS) from a municipal wastewater treatment plant was pretreated with ultrasound at varying durations and was subjected to anaerobic digestion in a biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay. Changes in gas production rates, calorific value (CV), elemental compositions, and ash contents of sludge ...
A comparative evaluation of anaerobic dechlorination of PCB-118 and Aroclor 1254 in sediment microcosms from three PCB-impacted environments
Kaya, Devrim; İmamoğlu, İpek; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Sowers, Kevin R. (Elsevier BV, 2018-01-05)
Aroclor 1254 (A1254) is the most toxic commercial PCB mixture produced, primarily due to its relatively high concentrations of dioxin-like congeners. This study demonstrates a comparative evaluation of dechlorination of A1254 and PCB-118 by indigenous organohalide respiring bacteria enriched from three PCB impacted sites: Grasse River (GR), NY; Fox River (FR), WI; and Baltimore Harbor (BH), MD. PCB 118 dechlorination rates in GR, BH, and FR was 0.0308, 0.015, and 0.0006 Cl-/biphenyl/day, respectively. A1254...
EFFECTS OF 2 HERBICIDAL WASTEWATERS ON CHLORELLA SP AND PHAEODACTYLUM-TRICORNUTUM
OKAY, OS; MORKOC, E; GAINES, A (Elsevier BV, 1994-01-01)
The effects on Chlorella sp. and Phaeodactylum tricornutum of two industrial wastewaters known to contain the herbicide residues of Trifluralin and Propanil have been determined by monitoring the number of cells, the chlorophyll fluorescence and the carbon dioxide assimilation simultaneously for a period of 14 days. The growth of the diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, was inhibited by concentrations of herbicidal waste of the order of 0.1-0.5%, apparently because the rate of reproduction was reduced. Chlore...
