The effect of warping in the design of steel space frames having members of thin walled steel sections is significant. In this paper the optimum design problem of steel space frames is formulated according to the provisions of LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance factor design of American Institute of Steel Construction) in which the effect of warping is also taken into account. Ant colony optimization technique is used to obtain the solution of the design problem. A number of space frame examples are designed by the algorithm developed in order to demonstrate the effect of warping in the optimum design. (C) 2011 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Ltd. Damage diagnosis in frame structures with a dynamic response method
Akgün, Müşerref Asuman; Ju, Fudong (Informa UK Limited, 1990-6)
The dynamic response of planar frame structures composed of damped Bernoulli-Euler beams is computed, with and without a crack present in the structure. The inertance changes due to the crack are investigated in relation to the crack location, with the aim of developing a diagnosis method. The optimum excitation location and frequency and the optimum locations for response measurement are determined for best diagnosis results. The effects of crack location and severity and of damping are investigated. Dampi...
Ant Colony Optimization based clustering methodology
İNKAYA, TÜLİN; Kayaligil, Sinan; Özdemirel, Nur Evin (Elsevier BV, 2015-03-01)
In this work we consider spatial clustering problem with no a priori information. The number of clusters is unknown, and clusters may have arbitrary shapes and density differences. The proposed clustering methodology addresses several challenges of the clustering problem including solution evaluation, neighborhood construction, and data set reduction. In this context, we first introduce two objective functions, namely adjusted compactness and relative separation. Each objective function evaluates the cluste...
Axisymmetric crack problem for a hollow cylinder imbedded in a dissimilar medium
Kadıoğlu, Fevzi Suat (Elsevier BV, 2005-05-01)
The analytical solution for the linear elastic problem of flat annular crack in a transversely isotropic hollow cylinder imbedded in a transversely isotropic medium is considered. The hollow cylinder is assumed to be perfectly bonded to the surrounding medium. This structure, which can represent a cylindrical coating-substrate system, is subjected to uniform crack surface pressure. Because of the geometry and the loading, the problem is axisymmetric. The z = 0 plane on which the crack lies, is also a plane ...
Seismic design of cold formed teel structures in residential applications
Uygar, Celaletdin; Yılmaz, Çetin; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
In this study, lateral load bearing capacities of cold formed steel framed wall panels are investigated. For this purpose lateral load bearing alternatives are analyzed numerically by computer models and results are compared with already done experimental studies and approved codes. In residential cold formed steel construction, walls are generally covered with cladding material like oriented strand board (OSB) or plywood on the exterior wall surface and these sheathed light gauge steel walls behave as shea...
Displacement amplification factors for steel eccentrically braced frames
Kusyilmaz, Ahmet; Topkaya, Cem (2015-02-01)
Inelastic deformation capacity of links is a factor that significantly influences design of steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). The link rotation angle is used to describe inelastic link deformation. The link rotation angle is generally calculated by making use of design story drifts that in turn are calculated by modifying the elastic displacements by a displacement amplification factor. This paper presents a numerical study undertaken to evaluate the displacement amplification factor given in ASCE7-...
