Power Spectra of Constrained Codes with Level-Based Signaling: Overcoming Finite-Length Challenges
Centers, Jessica; Tan, Xinyu; Hareedy, Ahmed; Calderbank, Robert (2021-08-01)
In various practical systems, certain data patterns are prone to errors if written or transmitted. In magnetic recording and communication over transmission lines, data patterns causing consecutive transitions that are not sufficiently separated are prone to errors. In Flash memory with two levels per cell, data patterns causing high-low-high charge levels on adjacent cells are prone to errors. Constrained codes are used to eliminate error-prone patterns, and they can also achieve other goals. Recently, we ...
Power-Law Distribution of Long-Term Experimental Data in Swarm Robotics
Arvin, Farshad; Attar, Abdolrahman; Turgut, Ali Emre; Yue, Shigang (2015-06-02)
Bio-inspired aggregation is one of the most fundamental behaviours that has been studied in swarm robotic for more than two decades. Biology revealed that the environmental characteristics are very important factors in aggregation of social insects and other animals. In this paper, we study the effects of different environmental factors such as size and texture of aggregation cues using real robots. In addition, we propose a mathematical model to predict the behaviour of the aggregation during an experiment.
Power stabilization of diode pumped solid state lasers by means of adaptive control of drive current
Şentürk, Tayfun; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
Lasers provide precision and sensitivity for various applications. However, some fundamental properties make lasers very susceptible to external changes. When stability of laser parameters is required the traditional approach is to stabilize the working environment, such as strict temperature and climate control, mechanical isolation as well as damping of any vibration. This traditional approach is very difficult to implement in harsh industrial environments and almost impossible for many military applicati...
Broadband Spectral Splitting of Light Using Wavefront Shaping
Gün, Berk Nezir; Yüce, Emre (2018-09-12)
When the dimensions of a medium are comparable to wavelength of light, diffraction plays a major role in wave propagation and it differs by wavelength. Thus, it is possible to obtain intended phase difference for each frequency by changing the thickness or refractive index of the medium [1]. As a result, waves at a specific frequency can be controlled to constructively interfere at a desired point. Liquid crystal displays, which enable to control refractive indices of each pixels via modulating the ampl...
Broadband spectral splitting of light using wavefront shaping
Başay, Yalın; Yüce, Emre; Yerci, Selçuk; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2018)
Splitting of light to different frequencies is an important tool for several photonic research and applications. One of those applications is increasing the absorption of light via spectral splitting in solar energy systems. Nowadays, this splitting process is realized by fixed diffraction gratings. However, these structures can't adapt to the environmental changes and their efficiencies differ from season to season. A structure that can adapt to environmental changes would certainly increase the efficiency...
