Timucin, M
In the present study, the powders of biphasic calcium phosphate were synthesized by decomposing monetite in aqueous solutions containing Ca2+, NH4+ and NO32- ions. The green biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics were prepared by cold isostatic pressing of the chemical powders. Controlled porosity in the green and sintered ceramic was obtained by using naphthalene-PMMA beads custom-made within the size range 200 to 400 microns. The ceramics were sintered by firing the organic-free compacts at temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1200 degreesC Pore size and pore size distribution in the sintered ceramics were evaluated by SEM analyses. In the porous artificial bone, the average pore size meets the requirements for natural bone ingrowth.

Fabrication and characterization of porous hydroxyapatite and biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic as bone substitutes
Koc, N; Timucin, M; Korkusuz, Feza (2004-01-01)
In the present study, the calcium phosphate powders (HAP, HAP-TCP) were produced by a precipitation technique involving the use of aqueous solutions of calcium nitrate and diammonium hydrogen phosphate. Preforms of calcium phosphate ceramics were produced by using a modified slip casting technique. Porosity in the cast and in the sintered ceramic was obtained through custom made PMMA beads similar to200-300 mum size. The green ceramic samples were prepared by suspending the apatite powder and PMMA beads in ...

Strontium (Sr2+) and fluoride (F-) ions are known to play an important role in bone and tooth metabolism. In this work, we prepare biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) bioceramics co-doped with different fractions of Sr2+ and F- ions to investigate the impact of dopant on the crystal structure and biological properties of BCP bioceramics. The materials were successfully synthesized using a wet precipitation method, followed by sintering at 1100 degrees C for 1 h. The sintered materials were characterized using ...
Synthesis and characterization of rare earth borophosphates
Özdil, Yasemin; Kızılyallı, Meral; Department of Chemistry (2004)
In this thesis, solid state reactions of Ln2O3, Y2O3, B2O3 and (NH4)2HPO4 were investigated to synthesize LnBP2O8 (Ln= Dy, Ho, Er) and YBP2O8 type of borophosphates which were not reported before. The products were analyzed by XRD, IR, DTA, SEM and EDX methods. In the first part of this thesis, synthesis of YBP2O8 through the solid state reaction of Y2O3 + 4(NH4)2HPO4 + B2O3 have been studied in the range 800-1140 °C. Orthophosphates of Dysprosium, Holmium, Erbium and Yttrium have tetragonal xenotime (YPO4)...

Bacteriorhodopsin (BR), a protein found in the purple membrane of Halobacterium halobium is used as a biocatalyst in photoelectrochemical hydrogen production in a NaCl solution. In present study the biocatalytic effect of BR of a new strain MILTU and strain S-9 were investigated in immobilized membranes The photoelectrochemical hydrogen production experiments were performed in a batch type glass reactor with free H. halobium packed cells or H halobium cells immobilized in polyacrylamide gel (PAG). It was fo...
Synthesis and characterization of nanosized calcium phosphates by flame spray pyrolysis, and their effect on osteogenic differentiation of stem cells

The present study evaluates the synthesis of biocompatible osteoconductive and osteoinductive nano calcium phosphate (CaP) particles by industrially applied, aerosol-derived flame spray pyrolysis method for biomedical field. Calcium phosphate nanoparticles were produced in a range of calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, (1.20-2.19) in order to analyze the morphology and crystallinity changes, and to test the bioactivity of particles. The characterization results confirmed that nanometer-sized, spherical calcium pho...
